Holy Cross Athletics

Christopher 'Kit' Hughes is now in his fifth academic year at the College of the Holy Cross, serving as the Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics.

Holy Cross teams have won six Patriot League titles during Hughes’ tenure, with the football team claiming championships in 2022, 2023 and 2024, the women’s basketball squad winning the title in 2023 and 2024, and baseball winning the 2025 championship. 

The department has continued to break Crusader Athletics Fund giving records during Hughes' tenure. In fiscal year 2023, the department raised over $3 million for the first time ever; most recently, in the 2025 fiscal year, Holy Cross Athletics raised a record $3.56 million. 

Academically, Holy Cross has continued to rank among the nation's elite under Hughes’ leadership. Throughout the 2024-25 academic year, Crusader student-athletes recorded a 3.40 semester GPA in the fall, and 3.43 GPA in the spring — marking the highest department GPAs on record. All 27 programs averaged above a 3.0 GPA during both semesters, marking the first times since 2016 (other than a COVID-impacted Spring 2020) that every Holy Cross team has recorded a GPA above 3.0 during a single semester. In 2023 and 2024, the Crusaders tied for sixth in the nation with an overall Graduation Success Rate of 98 percent.

Hughes' leadership ranges beyond The Hill; he is the chair of the Patriot League Football Committee, a member of the FCS National Selection Committee, and serves on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass and MetroWest. 

An experienced athletics administrator and former student-athlete, Hughes was named Holy Cross’ director of intercollegiate athletics by President Vincent D. Rougeau on Dec. 6, 2021. He came to Holy Cross after serving as the deputy athletic director at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

"As a former student-athlete, coach and administrator, he brings broad and relevant experience to his new role. His principled leadership, commitment to academic excellence and integrity, and deep experience in creating the strategic vision and structures that enable success stood out to the search committee, and make him an outstanding fit for the College."

While at Bowling Green, Hughes helped lead day-to-day operations of the Falcons' athletic department, and was responsible for administration of its men's basketball and football teams.  He came to Bowling Green after seven years at North Carolina State University.

Hughes earned his bachelor's degree in sociology in 2001 from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine and received his master's degree in higher education from Boston College in 2006. He was a four-year letterman in lacrosse at Bowdoin and led his team to the ECAC Championship in 2001.

A Massachusetts native, Hughes is married to the former Kathrine Ranere and the couple has four children: daughter Finley, and sons Coady, Cullen and Griffin.
