Susie Whelan is in her third season as assistantfield hockey coach at Holy Cross in 2009. A four-year starter forthe Crusaders as a player, Whelan brings her skills and leadershipto the other side of the team, assisting head coach Ali Hawk.
During her senior year at Holy Cross, Whelan wasnamed to the 2006 National Field Hockey Coaches AssociationDivision I All-New England region second team. Whelan tied forsecond nationally with three penalty strokes, and is tied for fifthall-time at Holy Cross with 20 career assists.
As a junior in 2005, Whelan was named to theAll-Patriot League second team and was a member of the PatriotLeague Academic Honor Roll. She finished with the third-mostsingle-season assists in program history (13 assists) and startedall 20 games. Whelan also led the team in both interceptions (104interceptions) and tackles (64 tackles). She finished the seasonranked second on the team and third in the Patriot League inassists. Whelan also ranked fifth on the team in points (13 points)and recorded one defensive save.
As a sophomore in 2004, Whelan started all 19games and finished the season ranked fourth on the team in scoringwith five goals and 10 points. She also finished the year rankedfourth on the team in tackles (31 tackles) and fifth on the team ininterceptions (54 interceptions).
During her first season with the Crusaders in 2003, Whelan wasthe only freshman player to start all 20 games. She finished theseason ranked second on the team in interceptions (70) and sixth intackles (36 tackles). She also recorded three defensive saves.
