Softball falls to Robert Morris on Day 2 of Sparkle City Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Holy Cross softball team fell to Robert Morris by a final score of 16-6 to close out the Sparkle City Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 22. After battling back and forth for two innings, RMU scored 11 runs between the fourth and fifth innings to pull away.

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Holy Cross: Avery Toddings (L, 0-3), 3.1 innings pitched, eight hits allowed, six runs (six earned), three strikeouts, three walks
  • Robert Morris: Kaitlyn Molitoris, 0.2 innings pitched, no hits, three runs (three earned), five walks
IN RELIEF:
  • Holy Cross: Maya Gallagher, 1.0 inning pitched, five hits allowed, seven runs (five earned), walk

AT THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Robert Morris got on the board in the top of the first inning when Poulich launched a two-run home run to right-center, giving the Colonials a 2-1 lead.
  • Holy Cross answered right back in the bottom of the first, making it 3-2 on a sacrifice fly by senior center fielder Ali Sniegocki, and pitching miscues from RMU.
  • Poulich went deep again in the top of the second, hitting a three-run home run to center for her second of the day, giving Robert Morris a 5-3 lead.
  • The Crusaders got a run back in the bottom of the second when senior shortstop Anna Brait lined a single through the right side to score sophomore Silje Emery, trimming the deficit to 5-4.
  • Robert Morris took its largest lead of the day in the top of the third, pushing across six runs to make it 11-4.
  • The Colonials tacked on an additional five runs in the top of the fourth, stretching  their lead to 16-4.
  • Errors by RMU in the bottom of the fourth allowed Holy Cross to score a pair of runners, making it 16-6.
  • The Colonials held the Crusaders scoreless the rest of the way, sealing a run-rule victory in five innings.
UP NEXT: 
  • The Crusaders head back up north and will next take on Central Connecticut State in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 28.
  • First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
