BALTIMORE, Md. – The Holy Cross softball team faced Cornell and UMBC in the opening doubleheader of the UMBC Tournament on Friday, Mar. 7. The Crusaders dropped game one to The Big Red 25-2 and shut out the Retrievers in game two 4-0. Freshman Jordan Goedel hit her career first home run, pitched her the first full game in her career and earned her first career win on the mound.
GAME ONE: CRUSADERS 2, THE BIG RED 25 (FINAL)
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
- Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (L, 2-3), 1.1 innings pitched, five hits allowed, six runs, two earned, two strikeouts
- Cornell: Kyrie Denny (W, 3-3), 3.2 innings pitched, three hits allowed, five strikeouts.
IN RELIEF:
- Holy Cross: Maya Gallagher, 1.0 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, eight runs, one earned, one strikeout.
- Holy Cross: Avery Toddings, 2.2 innings pitched, nine hits allowed, 11 runs, four earned, three strikeouts.
- Cornell: Laney Freiband, 0.1 innings pitched, two hits allowed, one run, one earned.
- Cornell: Maxine McCraw, 1.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed, one run, one earned.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Jordan Goedel: 1-for-2, one home run, one run scored, one RBI.
- Ava Gambichler: 1-for-2, one double, one RBI.
- Sydney Stapf: 4-for-5, one home run, two doubles, one run scored, eight RBIs.
- Emma Antich: 3-for-5, one home run, one double, three runs scored, four RBIs.
- Charlize Cai: 3-for-5, one double, four runs scored, three RBIs.
- Ella Harrod: 2-for-5, one home run, two runs scored, two RBIs.
- Haley Pirkey: 3-for-4, four runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Big Red ran up the scoreboard, unanswered, for four innings, tallying 21 runs.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Goedel crushed her first career home run over the left field wall.
- Cornell scored four more in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Ava Gambichler hit a double to right center to drive in freshman Silje Emery.
- The game ended in five innings with Cornell taking the 25-2 win over Holy Cross.
GAME TWO: CRUSADERS 4, RETREIVERS 0 (FINAL)
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
- Holy Cross: Jordan Goedel (W, 1-3), 7.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, eight strikeouts.
- UMBC: Bella DiGiandomenico (L, 2-0), 4.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, four runs, three earned.
IN RELIEF:
- UMBC: Kya Matter, 3.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders scored two in the top of the first with senior captain Jena Whipple cracking an RBI double into left field and junior Anna Brait scoring Whipple on an RBI ground out.
- In the top of the third, sophomore Caroline Higgins had an RBI walk and Gambichler reached first on a throwing error by the UMBC shortstop which senior captain Emma Fong scored on.
- Holy Cross took the 4-0 victory over the Retrievers.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
- Goedel crushed her first career home run in game one against Cornell and earned her first career win and pitched her first full game on the mound in game two against UMBC.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders return to action at the UMBC Tournament with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 8 at The Diamond at UMBC in Baltimore, Md.
- First pitch against Fairleigh Dickinson is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
- Holy Cross will then face Cornell at 2:00 p.m.
