Softball upended Monday by Army

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team suffered a five inning 9-1 setback to Patriot League opponent Army West Point Monday morning on Freshman Field.

The loss was the 19th on the season for the Crusaders and 6th in conference play. The Black Knights improve to 8-25, 4-5 PL with the win.

Sophomore Anna Brait hit .333 in the series with a team-high .556 on base percentage. Brait has reached base in nine straight games, the longest current active streak on the team.
 
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Amanda Eaglin: ND, 1.1 innings pitched, four hits allowed, unearned run, walk, two strikeouts. 
  • Senior Megan Yurchick: L, (4-10), 0.1 innings pitched, three hits allowed, four earned runs, walk.
IN RELIEF:
  • Sophomore Sophia Roncone: 2.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, three earned runs, two walks, two strikeouts.
  • Freshman Maya Gallagher: 2.2 innings pitched, five hits allowed, two earned runs, two strikeouts.
  • Breanna Izzo: W, (3-4) 3.2 innings pitched, two hits allowed, walk, three strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Senior Morgan Jensen: 2-for-2, RBI
  • Senior Jessica Mott: 1-for-2, walk, two stolen bases.
  • Freshman Emma Pietrzak: 1-for-2, run scored.
  • Mia Bonsignore: 3-for-3, home run, two RBI, run scored.
  • Kayla Edwards: 3-for-4, three runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A walk, double and single through the left side pushed Army ahead 2-0 in the first. They added two more runs to lead 4-0 through their opening at bats.
  • The Black Knights built a 5-0 edge through two frames.
  • Holy Cross cracked the scoring column in the home half of the second. Jensen legged out an infield single to plate a run making it 5-1.
  • An Army solo shot to lead off the third tacked on another run as they led 6-1. They produced three more insurance runs for the run rule win.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross remains at home on Wednesday, April 10 for a nonconference twinbill with Merrimack.
  • First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
