A pair of student-athletes from the Holy Cross baseball team earned weekly honors from the Patriot League, the conference announced on Tuesday, April 16. Senior
Alex Bryant was named the league's Pitcher of the Week, while freshman
Alex Sandell was selected as the Rookie of the Week.
Bryant had a stellar performance in Holy Cross' 7-1 win over Navy on Saturday, April 13. He threw a complete game, with 6.2 shutout innings until conceding his lone run of the day on an RBI double. He tied his season high with nine strikeouts, and allowed just four hits and a pair of walks. Bryant becomes the second Crusader to throw a complete game this season. He leads the Patriot League with 53 strikeouts on the year.
Sandell batted .412 in five starts at second base last week. He totaled two doubles, two triples and a home run to slug .941, and drove in a team-best seven runs while scoring four. He added in a stolen base and walked three times for an on-base percentage of .476.
Bryant became a first-time Patriot League Pitcher of the Week honoree; he was a two-time Rookie of the Week selection as a freshman. Sandell earns Rookie of the Week laurels for the first time in his career and is the third Crusader to earn the accolade this season, joining right-handed pitcher
Lion Gardiner (Feb. 27) and designated hitter
Braden Connors (March 19).
Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, April 17 with a midweek conference matchup against Army West Point. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Fitton Field.
