Roncone, Sniegocki guide softball to Saturday win

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Sophomores Sophia Roncone and Ali Sniegocki were instrumental to the Holy Cross softball team 2-0 shutout win of nonconference opponent Iona on Saturday afternoon at the Harrington Athletics Village.

The win improves the Crusaders to 6-11 on the young season while the Gaels fall to 3-10.

Roncone spun the fourth complete game shutout of her career scattering four hits and three walks while striking out five batters. Sniegocki was 2-for-3 with her third home run of the season, a two run shot in the bottom of the first inning.

Senior Jessica Mott was 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, a run scored and a stolen base. Mott has 34 doubles and needs six more for the program career record.  

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Sophomore Sophia Roncone W, (2-5), complete game, shutout, four hits allowed, three walks, five strikeouts.
  • Alyssa Dejianne: L, (1-5), 6.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, two earned runs, walk, two strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Ali Sniegocki: 2-for-3, home run, two RBIS, run scored.
  • Jessica Mott: 1-for-2, double, run scored, walk, stolen base.
  • Kayla Haywood: 2-for-3, stolen base.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Mott walked and stole second base in the bottom of the first. With one sway, Sniegocki homered for the third time this year for the 2-0 Crusader lead.
  • Iona threatened in the top of the second putting two runners on, but they could not cash in a run.
  • The Gaels in the third singled and stole second, but failed to advance further on the base paths.
  • On the top of the fifth, a great relay from Sniegocki to senior Morgan Jensen at home cut down a runner for the second out, Roncone then punched out the final batter for the last out.
DUE UP:
  • The Crusaders remain in Chestnut Hill on Sunday, March 17 against Iona
  • First pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
