WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior midfielder Cerys Balmer has been named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for competition from Aug. 21 – Aug. 27.
Balmer had a very strong week as a team leader in goals. The senior scored early at Maine off a corner served into the box by teammate Sydney Baldwin and drilled the ball in with a header at the 25:10 mark. Holy Cross ended up tying with Maine 1-1 due to a last second goal scored by the Bears.
The Massachustetts native got the momentum going for the Crusaders in the Bryant game by scoring with less than 10 minutes remaining in the match. Balmer knocked in another goal by way of a corner, assisted by teammate Ellie Zern, to equalize the score 1-1 at 81:08. Due to her efforts, she began a late comeback run that eventually led to a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs. The captain has hit the ground running this season scoring three of the four Crusaders goals so far.
Sophomore Olivia Perez was also recognized by the Patriot League earning an honorable mention. Perez received a nod after scoring the game winner, also assisted by Zern, for the Crusaders first victory of the season over Bryant. This marked her first goal and career points at Holy Cross.
Holy Cross women's soccer (1-2-1, 0-0) returns to action Thursday, Aug. 31 when they travel to Central Connecticut for a 6:00 p.m. match.
