Softball departs Florida with setback to Stetson

DeLAND, Fla. – The Holy Cross softball team was upended 6-1 by nonconference program Stetson Wednesday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.  

The loss sends the Crusaders to 4-10 on the year while the Hatters mark improves to 15-8.
 
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Hannah Marien: W (5-2), complete game, 12 strikeouts, six hits allowed, no earned runs.
  • Junior Megan Yurchick: L (3-6): 4.1 innings, four earned runs, seven hits allowed, strikeouts.
IN RELIEF:
  • Freshman Sophia Roncone: 0.2 innings, one hit allowed, no runs allowed.
  • Senior Audrey Gusel: 1.0 innings, two unearned runs, one hit allowed, one walk.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • With two outs in the bottom of the first, Marissa Baxter singled into left field for the 1-0 lead. Yurchick stranded two runners on base punching out the last batter of the frame looking.
  • In the top of the fourth, Brait lined the 10th pitch of the at bat into right field for the Crusaders first hit. She was thrown out at second base on a fielder's choice as the Crusaders trailed 1-0.
  • The Crusaders had a chance in the top of the fifth as Yurchick reached via error. Freshman Abbie Gold pinch ran and reached second on a sacrifice bunt. She was caught in a run down between second and third ending the Holy Cross scoring threat.
  • Stetson poured on three runs in the bottom of the fifth to expand the lead.
  • In the sixth, Jacobson led off the inning with a single. An error put another runner on base. With one out, Brait smacked a single to right field and a run came home on a fielding miscue as the Crusaders cracked the scoreboard at 4-1.
  • The Hatter added two more runs to their lead in the bottom of the sixth.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross continues spring break at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday.
  • First pitch of the Saturday doubleheader is slated for noon.
