Crusaders split at URI Wednesday

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Holy Cross softball team split a midweek non-conference series with Rhode Island on Wednesday at the URI Softball Complex. They lost game one by a 2-1 score in extra innings before rallying for a 5-1 victory in game two.

The split sends the Crusaders to 14-27 overall while the Rams move to 10-26.

Senior Kelly Nelson had a big series tossing 8.2 innings with 13 strikeouts, five hits allowed, three walks and only one earned run picking up her second save of the season and fourth in her career. Nelson needs only 28 more strikeouts to become the program's all-time leader.

Classmate Jessie Nagel went 4-for-8 at the dish in the twin bill while fellow senior Bailey Chavez was 3-for-6 across both contests.

GAME ONE: RAMS 2, CRUSADERS 1 (FINAL – 8 INN.):

IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Liz Lynchard W (7-18), complete game, six strikeouts, five hits allowed, one earned run, two walks allowed.
  • Senior Kelly Nelson: L (9-15), 7.1 innings, 11 strikeouts, three hits allowed, two walks, zero earned runs.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Vicki Viaclovsky: 2-for-3, double, RBI.
  • Rachel Zingerman: 1-for-4, RBI.
  • Senior Bailey Chavez: 2-for-3.
  • Sophomore Claire McCann: 1-for-4, double.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross scored a run in the fourth but left two in scoring position. Sophomore Megan Yurchick and Nagel connected on back-to-back singles to begin the frame. A fielder's choice put runners at first and third with one away. Junior Bailey Bates then reached and advanced to second on a muffed throw which scored the first run of the game. Lynchard settled down and limited the damage.
  • The Rams responded in the next half inning. Ari Castillo led off taking a free pass and advanced to second on a passed ball. Viaclovsky lined a single into left to plate her teammate. Nelson struck out two of the next three batters to conclude the scoring threat.
  • In the top of the sixth, McCann doubled down the left field line hoping to break the deadlock, but the Crusaders couldn't manufacture a run.
  • Nelson thwarted the Rams in the sixth as Leilyn Alvarez reached via error and stole second. A foul fly out to right field advanced the runner to third as Nelson send down the next two batters swinging to end the threat.
  • In the eighth the Rams scored the winning run on a single to third base.

GAME TWO: CRUSADERS 5, RAMS, 1 (FINAL):

IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Megan Yurchick: W (5-12), 5.2 innings pitched, two strikeouts, walk, zero earned runs.
  • Cameron Whiteford: L (2-3) 5.0 innings pitched two strikeouts, five hits allowed, earned run.
  • Kelly Nelson: S (2), 1.1 innings pitched, walk, two strikeouts.

STEPPING TO THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Two straight singles from Mott and Chavez combined with a Bengston walk loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first for Holy Cross. Whiteford then retired the next three batters to strand the bases jacked.
  • A fielding error in the second brought in the first run of the game for the hosts as they led 1-0 through two.
  • Bengston drove the first pitch she saw in the top of the sixth and drove it high off the left centerfield fence. Freshman Callie Thibault pinch ran for Bengston and crossed the plate on a two base fielding miscue as Yurchick moved to second. Nagel dug into the box and bashed a double down the left field line to put her team ahead 2-1.
  • Yurchick started the bottom of the sixth and a runner advanced to third base via a sacrifice bunt and steal, however, Mott made the smart move and gunned down the tying run on a sharply hit ball. Nelson came on to relive Yurchick and got the final out of the inning.
  • In the seventh, McCann broke the door open singling to left field with the bases loaded and Nagel produced an RBI single for the 5-1 lead.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross returns home to Worcester to play 10 of their final 12 games on Freshman Field. They welcome Army West Point to campus on Saturday for a three game conference set starting at 12:00 p.m.
