Softball falls to Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh rallied from a five run deficit to win by a 6-5 score over the Holy Cross softball team Sunday afternoon in Patriot League action at Leadership Park.

Lehigh (16-12, 7-0 PL) sweeps the series over the Crusaders (11-23, 3-6 PL) with their comeback win on Sunday. Senior Bailey Chavez recorded three hits at the dish which matched a career-high. There were seven total errors combined in the game.
 
IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Katelyn Young: W (8-5), 4.1 innings, two strikeouts, two hits allowed, no runs allowed.
  • Sophomore Megan Yurchick: L (3-11), 2.0 innings, two hits allowed, walk, strikeout, one earned run.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Emily Cimino: 3-for-4, home run, RBI, run scored.
  • Jaelynn Chesson: 2-for-4, home run, RBI, two runs scored.
  • Melissa Fedorka: 1-for-1, pinch hit, two RBI double.
  • Senior Bailey Chavez: 3-for-4, stolen base.
  • Yurchick: 1-for-4, double, RBI, run scored.
  • Senior Jessie Nagel: 1-for-3, double, two RBI, run scored.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross hung a five spot in the top of the third with all of their runs coming with two outs. Sophomore Jessica Mott started the scoring spurt by singling off a 1-0 pitch to right center. Chavez followed with a single to center and the inning continued when Lehigh's third basemen made an error that scored Mott. Yurchick and Nagel capitalized with back-to-back doubles and sophomore Claire McCann capped off the scoring with a single for the 5-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Chesson bashed a homer to left center off a 3-1 pitch cutting into the Crusader lead at 5-1. Nelson ended up loading the bases and Fedorka drilled a pinch hit double to plate two runs making it a 5-3 contest.
  • Nelson was relieved in the bottom of the fifth by Yurchick after she gave up a solo shot to Cimino. Yurchick allowed a single to the first batter she faced and two throwing miscues by the Crusaders pushed the Mountain Hawks ahead 6-5.  
  • Chavez singled to left for her third hit of the contest in the seventh, however, senior Erin Bengston grounded into a double play effectively ending the scoring chance.
 
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross returns to Freshman Field on Thursday, April 14 for a 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader versus Central Connecticut.
