LEWISBURG, Pa. – Looking for a series sweep Sunday, the Holy Cross softball team hit the field and suffered an 8-0 shutout loss in five innings to Patriot League opponent Bucknell on Becker Field.
The setback was first league loss for the Crusaders (7-17, 2-1 PL) in 2022 while the Bison improve to 4-22, 1-2 PL with the victory.

IN THE CIRCLE:

• Madison Roukey: W (1-3), 5.0 innings, complete game, shutout, three strikeouts, five hits allowed.
• Senior Kelly Nelson: L (5-10), 1.0 inning, six hits allowed, two strikeouts, seven runs – two earned.

STEPPING TO THE PLATE:

• Elena Horn: 2-for-3, double, run scored, RBI.
• Makenzie Hilling: 2-for-3, run scored.
• Zoie Smith: 2-for-2, two runs scored, walk, double.
• Annabella Hawkins: 1-for-2, double, stolen base, run scored, RBI.
• Sophomore Megan Yurchick: 1-for-2, double.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• In the home half of the first, Bucknell used small ball to score two runs. The leadoff batter, Horn singled through the right side and Hilling tried to sacrifice her teammate over but ended up with a bunt single. Both runners moved up a bag due to a passed ball. Nicole Rivait tried to sacrifice bunt, but it was a single as Horn scored and Hilling came around on an error for the 2-0 lead. A two out fielding error opened the door for Bucknell as they added on five more runs getting back-to-back-to-back doubles to lead 7-0.
• The eighth run scored in the next inning for Bucknell as Smith came racing home on a wild pitch.
• In the top of the third a sophomore Jessica Mott smash to third base and a senior Bailey Chavez single to third put two runners on with two away. The next batter struck out to end the threat.
• In the bottom of the fourth, freshman Callie Thibault made this slick double play seen below.

DUE UP:

• The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday for two non-conference contests at Dartmouth with first pitch slated for 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
