Softball downed twice at Brown

PROVIDENCE – The Holy Cross softball team headed out on the road to Providence to play a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader against Brown. The Crusaders were defeated twice by the Bears 16-2 in five innings during game one and 2-0 in game two.

The two defeats send Holy Cross to 5-16 on the year while Brown improves to 6-12 with both victories.
 
GAME ONE: BEARS 16, CRUSADERS 2 (FINAL – 5 INNINGS):

IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Jodie Aguirre W (1-2), 2.0 innings, three hits allowed, two earned runs.
  • Senior Kelly Nelson: L (4-9), 3.0 innings, seven hits allowed, one earned run, three strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Meghan Gormley: 2-for-3, four RBI, triple.
  • Dara English: 2-for-3, three RBI, double, one run scored.
  • Laurel Moody: 1-for-3, two RBI, triple, two runs scored.
  • Kat Clum: 2-for-4, two RBI, double, two RBI, three runs scored.
  • Sophomore Jessica Mott: 2-for-3, two RBI, double.
  • Jessie Nagel: 2-for-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Brown scored six runs in the bottom of the third. Moody tripled down the right field line scoring two runs to increase the score to 3-0. Gormley matched her teammate with a triple into the right center field gap making it 4-0. English ended the scoring via a double into left center growing the lead to 6-0.
  • The Crusaders scored twice in fourth. Junior Bailey Bates wore a pitch to the leg to start the inning, but was retired at second due to a fielder's choice. Junior Kari Jacobson singled through the left side of the infield then Mott doubled for the Holy Cross runs.
  • 16 batters went through the fourth inning for the hosts as they almost batted around twice scoring 10 runs to pull away from the Crusaders.
 
GAME TWO: BEARS 2, CRUSADERS 0 (FINAL):

IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Erin Elgas: W (1-0), 7.0 innings, complete game, shutout, three strikeouts, four walks, two hits allowed.
  • Sophomore Megan Yurchick: L (1-7), 6.0 innings, complete game, two earned runs, one walk, three strikeouts.  
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Brianna Rodriguez: 2-for-3, triple, stolen base, RBI.
  • Katie O'Leary: 2-for-3, stolen base.
  • Jessica Mott: 1-for-3, double.
  • Megan Yurchick: 1-for-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the top of the second, the Crusaders loaded the bases as Yurchick singled up the middle while Bates and junior Peyton Morehouse worked walks. The next batter grounded out to the pitcher with two away to end the scoring threat.
  • Small ball in the bottom of the fourth, an infield single, a stolen base and bunt RBI single from Rodriguez put the hosts ahead 1-0. Two more stolen bases in the inning put runners in scoring position with one away, but Yurchick induced two groundouts to end the frame.
  • With two away in the top of the fifth, Mott roped a double into left center, however she was stranded at second.
  • A Rodriguez leadoff triple combined with an O'Leary single to right plated an insurance run making it 2-0. O'Leary was put out at second due to a 5-4-3 twin killing to conclude the inning.  
  • A two out walk in the top of the seventh gave Holy Cross life, but the final batter struck out to end the game.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross continues their non-conference slate on Thursday with a double header at Merrimack with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m.
