Bengston belts two bombs in win against Siena

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Holy Cross softball senior Erin Bengston drilled two home runs as the Crusaders roped 12 base hits in a 5-2 win against Siena on Saturday evening. The win sends Holy Cross to 4-10 on the campaign while the Saints fall to 3-7 with the setback.
 
IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Senior Kelly Nelson W (3-6), 7.0 innings, eight strikeouts, two earned runs, complete game.
  • Adrianna Romano: L (1-1), 0.1 innings, four runs – three earned, one walk.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Bengston: 2-for-4, two home runs, four RBI, two runs scored.
  • Sophomore Megan Yurchick: 2-for-4, double, RBI, run scored.
  • Junior Kari Jacobson: 4-for-4, stolen base.
  • Junior Bailey Bates: 2-for-4, stolen base.
  • Sabrina Vargas: 2-for-3, double, two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders came out of the gate on fire crossing the plate four times in the opening frame chasing Romano from the game. With runners on first and second, Yurchick singled to right field plating sophomore Jessica Mott who reached via a fielding error. The next batter, Bengston smoked a round tripper to left field clearing the bases and making it a 4-0 edge early. Singles from sophomore Claire McCann, junior Peyton Morehouse and Jacobson loaded the bases, but Holy Cross couldn't add on to their lead.
  • Siena cut into the margin during the bottom of the second. A Vargas single to center scored Jocelyn Ulrich from second base making it a 4-1 contest.
  • Bengston led off the top of the third with another homer, this time a solo shot upping the margin to 5-1.
  • Vargas lined a two bagger to center field in the home half of the fourth pulling her squad within three, 5-2.
DUE UP:
  • The Crusaders wrap up their run at The Spring Games Sunday with a 9:00 a.m. contest Niagara.
