WEST POINT, N.Y. – Kelly Nelson threw her second collegiate no-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader with Army to earn a split on the day. The Crusaders dropped the first game, 11-3, before responding in the nightcap on the back of Nelson's gem to win, 1-0.
Nelson started game two and went the distance for her career-high fourth shutout of the season, while striking out eight.
Jessie Nagel had the solo home run that proved to be the only run necessary for the win in the second game. On the day she was 2-for-6.
Erin Bengston and
Olivia Eckelman were both 2-for-5 on the day, while Bengston had one RBI and one walk. Jess Mott had two hits and scored one run and
Alyssa Gutierrez hit her first home run of the season and second of her career.
GAME 1: AWP 11, HC 3
The Black Knights started out fast as three hits and one error led to them scoring three runs in the first. They would add one more in the second after a double scored the runner from second.
The Crusaders got one back on a Gutierrez home run in the third, but Army would stretch its lead after another three-hit inning in the fifth to go up 6-1.
Holy Cross would add two in the sixth thanks to singles by Mott and Bengston and two errors by the Army defense to make the game 6-3. In the bottom half of the inning, the Black Knights would tack on five more to end the game after six.
GAME 2: HC 1, AWP 0
In game two, Nelson and Army's Alicyn Grete matched each other's eight strikeouts through five innings, but Nagel hit the game-deciding solo shot in the top of the sixth to give Holy Cross a 1-0 lead that it would hold on to.
Bailey Chavez made two impressive plays in center to keep the no-hitter alive in the sixth, and with runners on second and third after an error and a walk in the seventh, Nelson got a fly out to right to seal the win.
BEYOND THE SOX SCORE:
- In her career, Nelson has started three games at the Army Softball Complex. In those three starts, she has two no-hitters, 17 strikeouts, and a 0.35 ERA.
- Her fourth shutout of the season, a career high and tying her for the fourth most in a season in program history, gives Nelson seven in her career, tied for the second most all-time in program history.

- For the second time this season, Nelson and Nagel combined to throw a shutout and be responsible for the game's only runs. Back on March 27, Nagel hit a two-run home run to compliment Nelson's eight-inning, shutout performance for the 2-0 win at Colgate.
