BOSTON – The Holy Cross field hockey team fell to Boston University 5-1 Thursday afternoon at New Balance Field. The result ends the Crusaders' season in the Patriot League semifinals and advances the Terriers to the championship game to take on either American or Bucknell.
BU scored twice in the first five minutes to open up an early lead, but the Holy Cross defense was able to settle things down and keep the Terriers from adding to their lead for the rest of the first half.
In the second quarter,
Rachel Perry made it a one-goal game with under four minutes remaining in the half. On a penalty corner,
Keely Smith sent in a hard shot that Perry was able to redirect in front to cut the Terrier lead in half.
BU would regain control in the second half and add three more goals to come away with the 5-1 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Perry's goal was her team-leading third of the season.
- Smith's assist was her first point of the season and 12th of her career.
- Brooke Ross made seven saves in goal for Holy Cross.
- The Terriers outshot the Crusaders 27-9 and earned 10 penalty corners to Holy Cross' five.
