Softball falls to UNCG on final day of Winthrop Tournament

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Holy Cross softball team fell to UNC-Greensboro, 11-7, on the final day of the Winthrop Softball Tournament.

Erin Bengston and Bailey Bates both went 2-for-4 in the game. Bengston hit her first home run of the season, drove in four runs, and scored once herself. Bates doubled, had one RBI, and scored three times.

Jessie Nagel went 1-for-2 with a triple and two walks, while driving in one and scoring twice. Kari Jacobson singled and walked, Olivia Eckelman scored once and walked, and Alyssa Gutierrez and Sydney Behrens each walked as well. Behrens also stole a base.

Mel Leach came on in relief in the circle and pitched a scoreless inning and two thirds, while striking out two.

Bottom First
  • UNCG used four hits and a walk to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
  • Holy Cross turned its first double play of the year in the frame.
Bottom Second
  • UNCG homered to increase its lead to five.
Top Fourth
  • Bates started the inning off with a double to right and she would score on Nagel's triple.
  • Bengston drove home Nagel with her first hit of the day, a single, but she was eventually stranded on first.
Top Fifth
  • Eckelman led off the inning with a walk.
  • Bates drove her home on a single.
  • After Nagel walked, Bengston brought both her and Bates home with a three-run blast giving the Crusaders the 6-5 lead.
Bottom Fifth
  • UNCG regained the lead after two batters were hit with a pitch, a single, and another walk.
  • Holy Cross' deficit was increased to 11-6 after a grand slam.
Top Seventh
  • Bates started the inning when she reached on an error by the shortstop.
  • Nagel walked, moving Bates over to second.
  • Jacobson walk as well, pushing Bates to third, where she was able to score on a wild pitch, but the comeback would end there.
 
UP NEXT:
The Crusaders will be back in action in two weeks when they take their spring break trip to Florida, beginning on March 3 at Florida State.
