WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's soccer team was defeated by Rhode Island, 3-1, on Tuesday night. The Crusaders battled, holding the Rams to one goal in the first half and Bobby Hurstak made a diving penalty kick save. Rhode Island's offense took over in the second half to take a 3-0 lead and seal the game.
Rhode Island (4-2-2) scored in the 9th minute as Filippo Tamburini scored on a good cross from Edvin Akselsen to take a 1-0 lead. Stravos Zarkostas doubled the lead in the 62nd minute, right after the Crusaders had their best offensive chance of the game. In the second penalty kick of the game for the Rams, Akselsen put the ball away to take a 3-0 lead in the 65th minute.
Holy Cross (0-7) continued to push offensively, as they registered five shots in the second frame. Emmanuel Petrov scored his second of the season as rookie Zachary Schubert picked up his first collegiate point on the assist. Schubert sent a low cross in from the left post that Petrov redirected into the back of the net.

“We started off the game showing too much respect and through phases of the game we played better and with a bit more confidence. We can't afford to have individual mistakes and that is what really cost us today. The bottom line is that we have to be more disciplined individually.”
