Santa Clara, Calif. – The Holy Cross men's soccer team dropped its season opener, 3-0, at Santa Clara. With five freshmen in the starting lineup, the Crusaders gave a strong defensive effort but could not hold off the Broncos.
Holy Cross' (0-1-0) defense held back the Santa Clara attack through the opening of the match, keeping the Broncos (1-0-0) at bay through six shots and three corners. The Broncos broke through in the 39th minute when a low cross was sent in from the far right of the goal and Julian Bravo scored just inside the near post on a header, 1-0. Bobby Hurstak recorded two saves in the opening half.
The second frame was bookended with Santa Clara goals. The Broncos scored at 46:49 after a loose ball was deflected in by Sam Agostini and at 87:18 Martin Aasen fired in a ball from the top of the box. Hurstak finished the game with three saves.
Koolman on the Game:
“We started the game well, organized, and discipline. Unnecessary mistakes caused for their first goal and giving it up right before half time was a bit of a back breaker. They created chances and we did not create the same chances.”
