Softball Holds On for 6-4 Win Over Harvard

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team defeated Harvard, the reigning Ivy League champion, 6-4, Tuesday evening at Freshman Field.

Alexandra Held got the win, her first of the season, and went 3.2 innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs, and striking out three. Kelly Nelson earned her first collegiate save as she came on in relief of Held and pitched 3.1 innings giving up just one hit, one earned run, and striking out six.

Alyssa Gutierrez had two hits on the day going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Bailey Chavez was 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI, and her first two stolen bases of her collegiate career. Erin Bengston doubled, scored once, and drove another two in. Jessie Nagel and Hannah Horton also picked up an RBI each.

This is the Crusaders' first win over the Crimson since April 6, 1998.

First Inning:

  • Chavez got things going with a one-out walk and then stole second, the first theft of her collegiate career.
  • Nagel followed with a single up the middle that scored Chavez from second for the first run of the game.

Second:

  • Carley Boothe started the next inning with a single to left. Horton moved her over to second on a sac bunt, and she took third on a passed ball.
  • Gutierrez drove her in with a single down the left field line.
  • Bengston was next up and she doubled to left, scoring Gutierrez, and she advanced to third on the throw home.
  • Chavez singled through the left side to bring Bengston home for the third and final Crusader run of the inning.

Fourth:

  • Harvard got two back thanks to back-to-back doubles to start the inning and a one-out single.

Sixth:

  • The Crusaders added a couple insurance runs in the sixth that started with a Sydney Behrens double to right field that clanked off the outfield fence.
  • Bella Jankowski came on to pinch run and Boothe moved her over on a sac bunt.
  • Horton laid down another and the squeeze was on. The throw home was high, but Jankowsi had it beat anyways. Horton moved over to second on the throwing error.
  • After a Gutierrez single, Begnston brought home the sixth run of the day on a ground ball to short.

Seventh:

  • Harvard hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, but Nelson sat the next three batters down on strikeouts to seal the win.

 

ON DECK:

Holy Cross will host Central Connecticut this Thursday, April 4, at 5 p.m.
