WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team dropped two games during the first day of the St. John's Invitational on Saturday.

The Crusaders first fell to Wagner, 9-6, followed with a loss to the hosts, St. John's, 7-1.

At the plate, Holy Cross was led by Jessie Nagel who went 4-for-7 with a run, two RBI, and a double. Jackie Brewster went 3-for-7 with two runs, and two doubles. Erin Bengston was 3-for-7 with two runs, an RBI, two doubles, and a triple. Bailey Chavez went 2-for-5 with a double. Against St. John's, Bengston caught four stealing.

Game 1 vs. Wagner

First Inning:

  • Brewster led the inning off with a double and moved over to third on Alyssa Gutierrez's sac bunt.
  • The Crusaders struck first when Brewster scored on a Taylor Wahler ground out.

Third:

  • With two outs, the Seahawks recorded back-to-back hits to push four runs across and take the lead.

Fourth:

  • Wahler started the bottom of the fourth out with a single to right field and scored on Bengston's double.
  • Nagel followed that up with a double of her own, bringing Bengston across.
  • Held singled up the middle, which scored Molly Neil who had come on to pinch run for Nagel.

Fifth:

  • Wagner re-took the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs, only one earned.

Sixth:

  • Bengston started the bottom half off with a triple to right center, her second of the year.
  • Nagel brought her home with a single in the next at bat.
  • Nagel scored as well on Hannah Horton's sac fly to center.

Seventh:

  • With two outs, the Crusaders loaded the bases thanks to a Bengston double, a Nagle single, and a Bella Jankowski walk. They had the go-ahead run at the plate, but Wagner was able to record the final out to get the win.

Game 2 vs. St. John's

First Inning:

  • St. John's pushed two across with two outs in the bottom of the first.

Third:

  • The hosts added three more by way of a couple home runs.

Fourth and Fifth:

  • St. John's would score once more in both innings.

Sixth:

  • Brewster started the top half off with a double and eventually scored on Wahler's sac fly, but that's all the damage the Crusaders could do.

Holy Cross will take on Hofstra and St. John's tomorrow in the final day of the St. John's Invitational.
