Women's Soccer Comes Up Short To Lehigh On Senior Day

THE BASICS

  • The Lead: Holy Cross battled through a scoreless first half but fell 1-0 on a second half goal by Lehigh on Saturday afternoon in Worcester on Senior Day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sophomore Sabrina Mertz nearly scored for Lehigh with a shot that deflected off the cross bar in the 28th minute of the game (27:15).
  • In the 56th minute of the game (55:16) Lehigh scored the first and only goal of the contest on an unassisted shot from the inside left corner of the box by freshman Sidonie Warnecker.
  • Sophomore defender Lily Puccia had a strong defensive showing and made a crucial block in the Holy Cross box during a Lehigh free kick with 21:40 left in the contest.
  • Senior forward Christina Napolitano nearly scored to tie the game for the Crusaders when her header cleared just over the net in 74th minute of the game (73:26).

  • "Today was a well-fought match," said heach coach Casey Brown. "We defended well and it was they type of game where one goal was going to decide it. Unfortunately we were on the wrong side of it today. We will continue to build and move forward every day."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Senior goalkeeper Brooke Holle made two saves in net for Holy Cross.
  • Sam Miller stopped one shot for Lehigh.
  • Junior midfielder Caitlin Harty led Holy Cross with two shots.
  • Shots were 9-4 in favor of the Mountain Hawks.

SENIOR DAY

  • The Crusaders celebrated their five seniors, Holle, Napolitano, Claire Malone, Maggie Carey and Courtney Cohen, for their hard work and dedication to the program on and off the field over the past four years.

UP NEXT

  • Holy Cross returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 24, to take on Patriot League opponent Bucknell during Homecoming at 5:05 p.m at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium at the Luth Athletic Complex.
