Softball Defeats Providence, Falls To Stony Brook

The Lead: Freshman Taylor Wahler (Inman, S.C.) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as the Crusaders downed Providence in their first game at the Stony Brook Invitational on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as Wahler hit a solo shot home run to right field.
  • The Crusaders extended their lead by four runs in the top of the third. After senior Sarah Kane (Jacksonville, Fla.) reached on fielder's choice, Wahler would bring in her second run of the game with a double to center field. Sophomore Taylor Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) brought home two more runs with a double to center field, as Wahler and freshman Jaclyn Brewster (Bridgeport, Conn.) crossed home plate. Sophomore Mandy McCarthy (Pearl River, N.Y.) then brought home senior Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) with a sacrifice fly to right field, making it 5-0.
  • The Friars added a run in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Providence outhit the Crusaders 6-5.
  • The Friars left seven runners on base, while Holy Cross left four.
  • Senior Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) earned the win for the Crusaders after pitching seven innings while allowing just one run on six hits and tossing three strikeouts.
  • Megan McCune took the loss for Providence after pitching seven innings and allowing five runs on five hits.
  • Wahler led the Crusaders' offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Moss also had a strong offensive game, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
  • Jarvis led Holy Cross with five putouts.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Durham improves to 3-5 on the season. This was her seventh complete game of the season, and the 33rd of her career.
  • With two RBIs against the Friars, Moss reached 13 for the season, surpassing her season total from last year.

Time: 2:30 p.m.
Location: Stony Brook, N.Y. (University Field)
The Lead: Brewster went 2-for-3 at the plate, but the Crusaders fell to Stony Brook by a score 11-2 in their second game of the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the first inning. After Jarvis reached on a fielder's choice, McCarthy hit a double to left field to bring her home and give the Crusaders the 1-0 advantage.
  • Stony Brook answered with a strong second inning, bringing in three runs on four hits.
  • The Crusaders brought another run home in the bottom of the inning, as Brewster hit a single to left center to bring home senior Hailey Mullen (Plainville, Mass.).
  • The Seawolves would then add another run in the third inning, before an offensive surge in the fourth inning led to another six runs for Stony Brook.
  • They would add one more run in the top of the fifth inning to make it 11-2 in their favor.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Seawolves outhit Holy Cross 13-4.
  • Both teams left five runners on base in the game.
  • Sophomore Katy Watson (Bexley, Ohio) took the loss for the Crusaders after pitching three innings and allowing four runs on eight hits. Freshman Olivia Sloane (Newton, Mass.) pitched two innings in relief, allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits.
  • Maddy Neales earned the win for Stony Brook, pitching five innings while allowing two runs on four hits.
  • Brewster led the Crusaders' offense, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
  • Mullen, Moss and freshman Savannah Young (Celebration, Fla.) all had three putouts.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders will be back in action tomorrow at the Stony Brook Invitational, as they take on the Seawolves at 12:30 p.m. and Fairfield at 2:30 p.m.
