Seslija Leads Women?s Soccer Past Colgate In Double Overtime

  • The Lead: Sophomore forward Andj Seslija scored the game-winning goal in double overtime as the Crusaders defeated Colgate, 2-1, on Saturday night in Worcester.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Abby Sotomayor got the Raiders on the board first, as she gained the ball in center field and scored in the 10th minute of play.
  • Colgate outshot the Crusaders 8-6 in the first half.
  • The Crusaders responded in the second half as Seslija found freshman defender Lucy Acuña along the sideline, who scored with a long ball in the 58th minute of play.
  • Shots in the second half were even at 6.
  • Colgate registered a pair of shots on net in the first overtime period, but senior goalkeeper Brooke Holle was able to make the saves and help send the game to a second overtime period.
  • In the 108th minute, Seslija took a free kick for Holy Cross just outside the top of the box, and sent it home with a high corner shot to end the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Holle made seven saves for Holy Cross.
  • Kelly Chiavaro stopped three shots for the Raiders.
  • Shots were 16-13 in favor of Colgate.
  • Seslija led the Crusaders with four shots, including two on target. She registered three points on the night with a goal and an assist.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • As part of Cancer Awareness day, the Crusaders totaled $1,469.48 in donations for the American Cancer Society.
  • This was the Crusaders' first win over Colgate since 2002, when Holy Cross defeated the Raiders 2-1 in double overtime on Oct. 13 of that season.
  • Seslija's goal was her fifth of the season, and the sixth of her career. It was also the first game-winning goal of her career.
  • Acuña's goal was the first of her collegiate career.

  • Holy Cross returns to action this Tuesday, Oct. 11, as it plays host to Brown at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium at the Luth Athletic Complex beginning at 7:05 p.m.
