Holy Cross Ties American, 1-1

THE BASICS:
  • Score: Holy Cross 1, American 1
  • Records: Holy Cross (4-8-4, 1-4-3 PL); American (4-10-3, 1-4-3 PL)
  • Location: Worcester, Mass. (Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium)
  • The Lead: Holy Cross and American combined to take 32 total shots with 18 on target, but the game would end in a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a back-and-forth contest, Holy Cross was able to break the stalemate in the 61st minute. Crusader senior Jenna Scanlon (Auburn, Mass.) dished a pass to classmate Annie Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) on the left side of the box. Galvin gave the ball right back to Scanlon who ripped a shot from the left side into the bottom right-hand corner of the net to give Holy Cross the 1-0 lead.
  • American, however, answered in the 86th minute (85:45). Eagle Danielle Beard gathered a loose ball in the offensive zone and launched a shot on target from 35 yards out. The ball slipped out of the hands of Holy Cross junior goalkeeper Brooke Holle (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and found its way into the back of the net to make the score 1-1.
  • The Crusaders had a chance to clinch the victory in the second overtime. Galvin gathered a ball in the right side of the box and slipped a shot past American goalkeeper Charlene Belanger. The ball, however, stayed just outside the goal line the entire length of the net and was cleared away by the American defense before a Crusader could convert the chance.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holle made 10 saves for Holy Cross, while Belanger was called upon to make six stops.
  • Holy Cross held the statistical advantage in total shots (19-13), shots on goal (11-7) and corner kicks (7-1).
  • Crusader freshman Caroline Wallace (Centerport, N.Y.) led all players with three shots on goal.
