Women's Soccer Opens PL Play With 0-0 Draw Versus Loyola (Md.)

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Holy Cross senior goalkeeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) made two saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season, as the Crusaders drew to a 0-0 tie against Loyola (Md.) in Patriot League women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Loyola took its lone shot of the first half in the ninth minute, as Lindsay LeSavage launched a ball from inside the box, but it was quickly stopped on a diving save by McCabe.
  • Holy Cross sophomore forward Christina Napolitano (Concord, Mass.) had the first scoring chance for the Crusaders in the 10th minute on a breakaway that led to a shot from in the box, but Greyhounds goalkeeper Colleen Folan was there to make the stop.
  • Holy Cross continued to dominate the first half with a scoring opportunity in the 15th minute when freshman forward Aly Spencer (Tewksbury, Mass.) launched a corner kick from the left side that found freshman midfielder Christina Callahan (Newton, Mass.), who headed the ball on target, but Folan made the save.
  • The Crusaders had two shots on goal during the 17th and 19th minutes. Junior midfielder Megan Greineder (East Greenwich, R.I.) had the first chance, followed by a great look by senior midfielder Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.) who received a through ball from junior forward Annie Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.).
  • Holy Cross had two shots on goal during the second half, while Loyola was held to one.
  • The Crusaders had four shots in overtime, but neither team had any shots on goal, as the game concluded in a 0-0 tie.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • McCabe made two saves for Holy Cross, while Folan made seven stops for Loyola.
  • The shutout was McCabe's seventh of the season, which ties her for third place in program history in single-season clean sheets.
  • The Crusaders held the edge over Loyola in total shots (18-5), shots on goal (7-2) and corner kicks (7-0).
  • Callahan led the Crusaders with five shots, including two on goal, while Galvin, Spencer, and Righini all tied with three shots apiece.
