Women's Soccer Draws 1-1 Against Fairfield

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Junior Sarah Price (Avon-by-the-Sea, N.J.) scored the lone goal for the Crusaders, as Holy Cross played to a 1-1 draw against Fairfield in non-conference women's soccer action on Thursday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross had the first scoring opportunity during the 11th minute when senior Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.) took a shot from inside the box only to watch it graze the fingertips of Fairfield goalie Kathleen Early.
  • In the 12th minute, Price had a chance on a header off a corner kick, but the ball rang the crossbar and stayed out of the net.
  • In the 27th minute, freshman Aly Spencer (Tewskbury, Mass.) ripped a shot from inside the box, but Early made the diving save to preserve the shutout. 
  • Fairfield had its first shot on goal in the 56th minute when Pam Coufos launched the ball from the right side, but Crusader senior goalkeeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) made the diving stop. 
  • Holy Cross took the 1-0 lead in the 74th minute when Price headed in a free kick from sophomore defender Claire Malone (Glen Ridge, N.J.)
  • Just over two minutes later, Fairfield's Anna Borea connected on a header off a corner kick from Jessica Broadbent to even the score at 1-1 during the 76th minute of the second half.
  • Both teams had a pair of shots on goal in the overtime period, but failed to convert the chances as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Neither goalie earned the decision as McCabe made five saves for Holy Cross, while Early recorded twelve stops for Fairfield.
  • Holy Cross held the advantage in shots (23-12), shots on goal (13-6), and corner kicks (4-2).
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • The Crusaders ended a nine-game losing streak against Fairfield, as the overall series record stands at 9-1-2 in favor of the Stags.
  • The 13 shots on goal and the 23 total shots by Holy Cross were a season high.
  • The goal by Price was her second of the season, while the assist by Malone was her second of the year.
