Paul Harney Inducted Into Massachusetts Golf Hall Of Fame

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Massachusetts Golf Association has announced that former men's golfer and Holy Cross Hall of Famer Paul Harney will be inducted into the Massachusetts Golf Hall of Fame in October. Harney, a 1952 graduate of Holy Cross will be a part of the second class of inductees to be enshrined at the William F. Connell Golf House & Museum in Norton, Mass.

A native of Worcester, Harney came to Holy Cross in 1948 and began an outstanding golfing career, both at the collegiate and professional levels. Mentored by Holy Cross Hall of Famer Gerry Anderson '38 and coached by Charles Donnelly, Harney's accolades would begin early. As a sophomore, he was a medalist in the New England Championship and the following year as a junior, he won the Eastern Championship at Annapolis. As a senior in 1952, he was a medalist at the NCAA Championship at Purdue University and finished his college career with a remarkable 52-4 record.

Harney served in the U.S. Navy after graduation before joining the PGA Tour full-time in 1955. He pared his schedule down to part-time on the Tour in 1963 but remained competitive, winning the Los Angeles Open in 1964 and 1965. His performances in major tournaments are also impressive, as he finished in fourth place in the 1963 U.S. Open and had four top-eight finishes in the Masters during the 1960s. Harney finished his PGA Tour career with six total wins. He also entered five Massachusetts Opens and won all of them (1967, 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1977).

In 1974, Harney was named PGA Golf Professional of the Year, while in 1995 he was the inaugural inductee into the New England Golf Hall of Fame. In 2005, he was welcomed into the PGA Golf Professional Hall of Fame.
