  • The Lead: Colgate sophomore forward Sarah Coy tallied both goals to help lead the visiting Raiders to the 2-1 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Coy recorded the first goal of the contest in the 20th minute of action (19:41). Off a free kick from 20 yards out, she drove a shot into the top right corner of the net to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead.
  • Holy Cross battled back and tied the game at 1-1 in the 25th minute (24:52). Crusader junior midfielder Jenna Scanlon (Auburn, Mass.) fed a pass to senior midfielder Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.) in the middle of the offensive zone. She then send in a one-touch through ball to freshman forward Aly Spencer (Tewksbury, Mass.) who beat Colgate goalkeeper Brenna Mason from the middle of the box.
  • The Raiders broke the stalemate in the 33rd minute (32:50), as Coy scored her second goal of the contest with a long shot from the top of the box to make the score 2-1.
  • Holy Cross had a great chance to tie the game in the 72nd minute, as Spencer launched a hard shot on net, but Mason made the clutch save and did not allow a rebound on the hard drive from the left side.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Mason made eight saves for Colgate, while Holy Cross senior goalkeeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) tallied five stops.
  • Colgate held the 14-12 edge in total shots and the 7-2 advantage in corner kicks, but Holy Cross held the 9-7 margin in shots on goals.
  • Spencer tallied a game-high five shots on net in the contest.  

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Spencer recorded her 10th goal of the season, which leads both the team and the Patriot League. Her 10 goals are tied for the fourth most by a Crusader in a single season, while her 23 points this year are tied for seventh on the single-season list.
  • Righini and Scanlon registered their third and second assist of the season, respectively.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Friday, Oct. 17, when it travels to Annapolis, Md. to take on Navy at 7:00 p.m.
