2025 Kickoff Event (Sept. 4)

The Holy Cross football team kicks off its 2025 campaign this Saturday, Aug. 30 against Northern Illinois. Under second-year head coach Dan Curran, the 2025 Crusaders feature a blend of experienced stars and young talent looking to make an impact.

OFFENSE

Captain and star running back Jayden Clerveaux leads a talented backfield, returning for his junior campaign in 2025 after a breakout sophomore season. A year ago, he stepped in as the team’s starter after All-American Jordan Fuller suffered a season-ending injury in Week 3, and didn’t skip a beat, earning All-Patriot League first team and All-New England honors. Clerveaux ended the year with 942 rushing yards, while also scoring 11 touchdowns, ranking second in the conference.

Clerveaux is the Patriot League's returning leader in rushing touchdowns. In league action, he averaged 106 rushing yards per contest. He had three 100+ yard games and four multi-touchdown games in 2024, including back-to-back two-touchdown games in wins over Bucknell and Georgetown.

Senior Sam Slade appeared in all 12 games a season ago and racked up 333 yards on 79 carries, providing a strong veteran presence in the running backs room. Senior Nyeoti Punni, who joined the football program as a sophomore from the Crusader track and field program, had a strong camp, and is set to see significant time this season as well. In a room that features tremendous depth — also with sophomore Naz Treadwell and rookies Joseph Williams and Luke Foster  — numerous backs could see time on the field this year.

Senior wide receiver Max Mosey also returns after a breakthrough 2024 season. Also an All-Patriot League first team honoree, Mosey registered 37 catches for 715 yards and six touchdowns. Mosey, who arrived on The Hill as a quarterback, provides a versatile option for the Crusader offense; a year ago, he rushed for two more scores and passed for another. His 19.3 yards per catch ranked in the top 10 nationally.

Sophomore Alijah Cason had a strong rookie campaign a year ago, both as a receiver and kick returner. He earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors after a solid showing in the Crusaders’ Patriot League opener at Colgate.

Senior Blake Youngblood, who has played 23 career games, brings experience for the Crusaders. Junior Charly Mullaly missed time due to injury a season ago, but scored a touchdown in the Crusaders’ opener at Rhode Island, and totaled 139 yards in four contests. Sophomore Ty Curran, son of head coach Dan Curran, transferred to Holy Cross from Ball State this spring and will play a factor both as a receiver and as a return specialist. Other names to watch include rising sophomores SirCharles Gordon and RJ Newton, along with freshman Lincoln Fisher.

Transfer quarterback Cal Swanson earned the starting job out of camp, and will play his first collegiate action this Saturday. A transfer from the University of Illinois, Swanson ranked as one of the top quarterbacks out of Oklahoma during a standout career at Ardmore High School.

A number of tight ends will play a major role this season, led by senior Nathan Schillinger and sophomore Mason McSweeney. Both appeared in all 12 games a year ago. Junior Luke Petitta will also see significant time.

Along the offensive line, senior captain and right guard Cam Nolan returns after earning All-Patriot League Second Team accolades in 2024. Senior right tackle and captain Joe Metzger, along with junior left tackle Bradford Blattner, also return with starting experience. The Holy Cross offensive line conceded just 13 sacks a year ago — their 1.08 sacks allowed per game was the best mark in the Patriot League and 11th-best nationally, and the Crusaders only conceded nine sacks total against FCS competition. Both helped anchor a Crusaders offense that averaged 27.6 points per contest.

Junior transfer Jayden Joyce (Davidson) and sophomore Liam Lynch will rotate in at guard, and junior Sean Woods enters the year as the team’s starting center. Other names to watch along the line include junior Bennett Nunnally, senior Noah Eldridge, sophomore Brady Earle, sophomore Ashton Booker and freshman Dominic Sorrentino.

DEFENSE

The Holy Cross defensive line features major depth and experience, led by senior captain and defensive end Christian Ross, who has started every game since the start of 2023. A year ago, he finished with five TFLs and a pair of sacks. Two fifth-year student-athletes, edge Joseph Townsend and tackle Kevin Gillis, led the team in sacks a year ago, with five and four,  respectively.

Junior defensive tackle Brice Stevenson has started 14 games since his freshman season, recording 30 tackles and two quarterback hurries last year. His classmate, tackle Jovan George, has also been a key contributor since arriving on The Hill as a freshman.

Sophomore tackle Jordan Pritchard-Sewell made a statement in 10 games as a freshman in 2024, recording three TFLs — including a sack during a start at Syracuse. Senior defensive end Colin Reynolds has made 24 career appearances, including in all 12 games last season. Junior edge Ross Dansdill returned from injury last season and had an immediate impact; his blocked punt in a Patriot League win vs. Bucknell earned him conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Freshman Vin Ferrara could also play an early role this season.

Junior captain and cornerback Cam Jones leads the Holy Cross secondary. He earned All-Patriot League second team honors a season ago, starting all 12 games at cornerback and leading Holy Cross with nine pass breakups and matching the team lead with a pair of interceptions. He is the Patriot League's returning leader in passes defended (11). He also tied for third on the team last year with 56 tackles.

Junior corner Eli Thompson had 29 tackles and nine PBUs a season ago, and has three interceptions in his career. Sophomore cornerbacks Caiden Newsome and Omarr Dixon should see an expanded role in the secondary as well.

At safety, junior Garrett Baldwin looks to move into a starting role after appearing in all 12 games a year ago. Junior Chisom Onwuzurigbo also played in all 12 games last year, forcing a fumble and recording an interception. Junior Donovan Comestro returns after missing last season with injury; he had a productive freshman campaign in 2023, in which he started eight games. Senior Tommy Bestpitch will also play an increased role in the secondary this year after finishing 2024 with 21 tackles and two pass breakups.

Junior linebacker Cam Santee returns after a stellar sophomore campaign, in which he totaled 51 tackles and six TFLs. Junior Carlo Crocetti and sophomore Lathan Croley project as starters for Week 1, with senior Sam Boyer, sophomore Will Miller, freshman Tyler Georgs and junior Adam Due in the mix as well. Crocetti played in all 12 games last year while Croley had 10 appearances in his rookie campaign. Boyer was the Crusaders’ Special Teams MVP for the 2024 season.

Holy Cross held four of its six conference opponents to one touchdown or less last season, holding league foes to just 16.5 points per game, the best mark in the Patriot League.

SPECIALISTS

Senior Luis Palenzuela will handle the Crusaders’ placekicking duties to start the season, with sophomore Ethan Moss projected as the team’s punter and holder. Freshmen Owen Saraceno and Alessandro Garrett round out the Crusaders’ placekicking corps.

Senior John Owens, who played 11 games as a tight end and special teamer for the Crusaders in 2024, will be Holy Cross’ long snapper this season.

NEW-LOOK PATRIOT LEAGUE

With the addition of perennial FCS powerhouse Richmond to the Patriot League ahead of the 2025 season, the Crusaders’ conference slate looks different than in recent years. Holy Cross and the Spiders will face each other in Richmond on Oct. 18 in the first matchup between the two teams since 1964.

William & Mary and Villanova will also join the conference for football in 2026 as the league continues to expand.

Holy Cross’ conference slate kicks off on Sept. 27 at Fordham, with other Patriot League matchups vs. Colgate (Oct. 25), vs. Lafayette (Nov. 1), at Lehigh (Nov. 8) and at Bucknell (Nov. 15). The Crusaders round out their regular season with a conference contest against Georgetown at Fenway Park on Nov. 22

The Crusaders enter the 2025 campaign after winning a share of the Patriot League crown last season — marking an unprecedented sixth straight league championship. This marked the 12th Patriot League title in Holy Cross history; no other team in league history has ever won six consecutive conference titles. The Crusaders went 5-1 in conference play, with a 6-6 record overall in 2024.

Holy Cross is 24-2 in Patriot League contests in the 2020s.
