Greece Tour

Holy Cross Men's Basketball | Greece Travel Blog

The Holy Cross men's basketball team is traveling through Greece this July. Below, you'll find a first-hand account of their travels from members of the program.

JULY 30

I’m writing this on our flight from Athens to Zurich, the first leg of our return home.

As I look toward the back of the plane, virtually every member of our team is sound asleep — a sign of a group that is both exhausted and fulfilled from an absolutely phenomenal eight-day trip to Greece.

If you’ve followed our journey on our various social media platforms, you’ll know that our guides from Basketball Travelers did an amazing job of structuring an itinerary that combined equal parts history, culture, competition and cuisine, surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. Greece has always been on my travel “bucket list,” and I can honestly say that I wouldn’t change one aspect of our itinerary or experience. This is the fourth time that I’ve taken a team on a tour with Basketball Travelers — in my opinion, the best in the business for international team travel. I have known BTI founder Nels Hawkinson for over 30 years, and this time we had the good fortune that our tour guides were Nels’ daughter Carlyn, her husband Joel and daughter Lena. After eight days together, they feel like a part of our family.

I am a passionate proponent of these foreign tours that the NCAA permits every four years as an essential part of a student-athlete’s education. In my opinion, awareness, appreciation, and respect for global history, culture, and traditions is vital to becoming a well-educated person.

From a basketball perspective, this trip has been invaluable. It has exposed our players to international basketball and given them confidence to know they can play professionally as well as navigate and thrive in a foreign country. The additional practices in advance of the trip along with the competition against European club teams will help prepare our team for the upcoming season. The most important benefit, however, has been the enhanced communication and cohesiveness that developed because we shared such an intense and immersive experience.

This year’s team was an absolute joy to be around for the entirety of our trip. They were engaged during all of our tours, took advantage of their free time to explore at each stop on our journey, and were incredibly respectful and responsible. I could not be prouder of our team, and I am so excited to begin the journey of the 2025-26 season when we return to campus in the fall!

There are so many individuals to thank for this truly transformative experience: our student managers Alex Sepe and Aiden Konold and Director of Basketball Operations Colin Richey who did an incredible job managing the logistical details for this trip; Director of Athletics Kit Hughes for his enthusiastic support of this trip; and Deputy Director of Athletics Nick Smith, who traveled with our team and provided invaluable assistance and insight every step of the way.

Finally, everyone in our program is extremely grateful for the incredibly generous support of our three lead donors and proud Holy Cross alums who funded this transformative experience for our team. They have shown unwavering commitment to Holy Cross and our men’s basketball team, embodying the Jesuit mantra of “men and women for others.”

We are touching down now in Zurich. One more leg of the trip before we’re back in Worcester.

As they say in Greece, Kherete (Goodbye)!

JULY 29

On our last full day, we met in the lobby at 8:10 am to head to the ferry that would take us to Hydra Island. Once we arrived, we found a beautiful beach, and then we swam and cliff dove for a couple hours. After we had our fun, we went and enjoyed a high-end restaurant. The waiter informed us Jordan and D-Wade ate at the same place, so it was very cool. We had some spare time and we decided to get back into the water, before it was time to head back to Athens. Once we got back to Athens, we went to a very amazing final dinner at a rooftop nearby where we had an unreal view of the Acropolis. It was a wonderful final day.

Today, the team started the morning off around 7:30am for our workout at the Panathenaic Stadium, where we did a quick workout and learned about its historic significance. It was a unique experience to train in such a legendary venue. We then checked out a local Greek athletic shop, where we explored an impressive selection of Olympic sportswear. Later in the evening, we played our second game against a local Athens team (Panelefsiniakos) and came out on top with a score of 86-58. Overall, it was a great way to end our final game here in Greece. Definitely looking forward to our last day visiting Hydra Island tomorrow.

We started the day with breakfast as a team in the Meteora hotel this morning before beginning the journey to Athens. Halfway through the bus ride to Athens, we stopped in Kamena Vourla, where we enjoyed a great lunch with an unbelievable view of the water and the mountains. The restaurant was right on the beach, so we were able to walk straight from the restaurant into the water. We then drove the rest of the way to Athens before arriving at the Royal Olympic Hotel. We were then given an amazing tour of the Acropolis, where we were able to learn about the history of the city. The architecture and views were truly incredible! Finally, we walked down from the Acropolis to the Plaka, a historic neighborhood in Greece, and enjoyed a great meal.

We began the day with a goodbye to Thessaloniki and hit the road toward Meteora. Although it was a lengthy bus ride, the views along the way made it completely worth it. Once we arrived, we stopped for a quick lunch before heading to our tour of the Meteora Monasteries. When we reached the top of the rock, we were greeted by the best views of Meteora. We were so high up it almost felt unreal. Exploring the rich religious history behind these monasteries made the experience even more powerful. This was definitely one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever been part of. We wrapped up the day with an amazing team dinner at Great Kouvela, filled with great food and even better company.

Day 3 in Greece was a full day! We woke up to an unbelievable view for breakfast at the hotel (see below). After breakfast the first competition of the day began, The Amazing Race. We were split into teams and had to race around downtown Thessaloniki taking pictures in front of various tourist attractions. Our team came away with a participation trophy only, but it was still fun! After the race we were all able to relax before our first game, the first time for this group playing together against another opponent. The guys did a great job playing together and encouraging each other through the ups and downs. We ended up with a win and everyone on the roster contributing which was a great early reward for all the hard work this summer. We are on the way back from the game now, and about to have pizzas and relax before getting back on the road to Meteora tomorrow for another new experience!

I have been in perpetual sweat since we touched down in Greece — so if there are typos, I am blaming that! Thanks for follow HC Basketball and you will love cheering for this team!

JULY 24

Our day in Thessaloniki started with a delicious hotel breakfast shared with the whole team, setting the tone for the day full of adventure. We toured the beautiful city, learning about the historic White Tower and the legacy of Alexander the Great, both key symbols of Thessaloniki’s rich past. After the tour, we got to stroll through the city market — it was such a great atmosphere, and we grabbed something tasty to eat (preferably a delicious gyro, which is what I got). In the afternoon, we all got to relax at both the outdoor and indoor pools, enjoying some time among ourselves. To cap off the day, we gathered at The Kitchen Bar for a memorable dinner together. I can’t wait for the journey to continue!

Arriving in Thessaloniki was astonishing. As soon as we got to the hotel, we went outside to explore around the area. There was a beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea outside the hotel. The different variety of stores on the strip by our hotel was cool to see — ice cream shops, restaurants, souvenir shops, and more.
