'Sader Stories: Sally Zinsner

By Charles Bare

Coming out of high school, Sally Zinsner was not highly recruited as an athlete. But as she was looking at where to attend college, lacrosse still played a big factor in her decision.

“I wanted to find a school where I could continue playing lacrosse,” Zinsner said. “When I found out that I would have the opportunity to walk on at Holy Cross, I was really excited. I thought this was a program where I would fit in well and could make an impact. I also loved that there are smaller class sizes and that Holy Cross is a Catholic school.”

In addition to those factors, Zinsner had another important thing playing into the decision: her mother, Mary, is a 1987 Holy Cross graduate. That gave her extensive knowledge of all the great things she could experience during her time on Mount St. James.

“My mom always talked about the great community at Holy Cross that stays with you after college,” Zinsner said. “She loved her experience here as a whole, and everything that it was able to let her do after graduation. I always knew that I would do well here and that I would love it too.”

The youngest of four children, Zinsner was the first of her siblings to attend Holy Cross, but she was not the first Division I athlete. Her sister, Addie, was a member of the lacrosse team at Yale. Her older brother, Teddy, played on the golf team at Yale, while her other brother, P.J., was on the lacrosse team at North Carolina.

“Lacrosse was always a big part of my life growing up,” Zinsner said. “My siblings and I would play 1v1 in the back yard as far back as I can remember, and I would always go along to watch them play in their games. It is really fun now, since I’m the only one still playing college sports, to have three little coaches on my side to offer me advice after our games.”

Even with all of that family support, Zinsner encountered an unexpected challenge during her freshman season. Just two days before the team’s first scrimmage, she suffered a serious knee injury that would keep her on the sidelines for the next year.

“That was a really tough time for me,” Zinsner said. “It’s a really debilitating thing to have your leg give out on you. I had to go from being a teammate and a competitor to just being a teammate. I also had to do a lot of rehab work, whether it was getting extra treatment or doing strength exercises. It was difficult to handle at the time, but now I’m able to appreciate that experience. I know to just be happy that I get to play lacrosse with a great, supportive team around me.”

When she finally got back on the field for her sophomore year, Zinsner was able to become a key contributor for the Crusaders from day one. She scored her first collegiate goal in the 2023 season opener at Fairfield, and went on to rank third on the team in scoring with 36 points on 26 goals and 10 assists. Then she took another big step forward as a junior, earning second team All-Patriot League honors while helping the team advance to the conference semifinals. Zinsner totaled a team-high 55 goals and 23 assists for 78 points during the 2024 campaign, with her 78 points being the third-most ever by a Crusader in a single season.

Following those outstanding performances, Zinsner was selected as one of Holy Cross’ team captains for the 2025 season.

“I was pretty excited to be named a captain,” Zinsner said. “It is a lot of responsibility, but I know that I have a lot of people around me who can help me lead. It feels good to know that people trust me with this important role and all the duties that come with it.”

As the 2025 campaign has gone along, Zinsner has continued to develop as a bigger and bigger factor for the Crusaders both on and off the field. She currently ranks second on the team in scoring with 49 points on 35 goals and 14 assists, while leading the team to an overall record of 8-3 and a 4-0 mark in the Patriot League. With less than a month remaining in the regular season, Zinsner and the Crusaders will look to maintain their strong play down the stretch.

“Everyone on this team has a ton of faith in each other,” Zinsner said. “We are really confident that we can go out and compete with anyone. We just need to keep up our consistency, trust the game plan and keep pushing forward with some tough games ahead.”
