Holy Cross Baseball: Five Things To Watch

By Matthew Cerullo

The Holy Cross baseball team returns to the diamond for the 2025 season, which opens on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. against No. 22 Auburn. After relying on strong young talent in recent seasons, the Crusaders will benefit from an experienced group of upperclassmen for the upcoming campaign.

The Crusaders return after a breakthrough campaign in 2024, in which they earned the No. 3 seed in the 2024 Patriot League Tournament. Despite a number of injuries to key starters, Holy Cross recorded its most Patriot League wins since 2019 with a 14-11 mark in league action -- an eight-win improvement from 2023. The Crusaders finished with their first .500 regular season (25-25) overall since 2016, also posting an upset of No. 24 Kansas State.

PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Senior right-handed pitcher and first baseman Sean Scanlon is back in the fold for the Crusaders after missing most of last season due to injury. A team captain, Scanlon was named the 2025 Preseason Patriot League Player of the Year and also earned a spot on the Preseason All-League Team as an at-large selection for the second consecutive campaign.

A two-time All-League second-team member, Scanlon has appeared in 105 games in his career, slashing .296/.435/.469 with 10 home runs, 61 runs batted in, 60 runs scored, 29 doubles and 64 walks. On the bump, he's appeared in 30 games , making 21 starts and amassing 48 strikeouts over tossing 71.2 innings.

During his last full season in 2023, he batted .297 with 18 doubles, six home runs and 36 RBI. He ranked third in the Patriot League with a .461 on-base percentage, drawing a league-best 38 walks while also leading the league after being hit by a pitch 16 times. On the mound, Scanlon started 15 games — tied for the most in Division I during the regular season — striking out 25 batters over 40.2 innings.

KEY RETURNERS

The Crusaders return four 2024 All-Patriot League honorees: junior starting pitcher Danny Macchiarola, senior first baseman Chris Baillargeon, senior shortstop Jimmy King, and sophomore catcher Colin Brown,

Macchiarola, a four-pitch right-handed pitcher, leads the rotation for the Crusaders armed with a 90-93 MPH fastball and wipe-out slider that induces plenty of swings and misses. He finished 2024 with a 6-5 record across 13 starts, with a 5.74 ERA and 67 strikeouts over 69.0 innings pitched.

Baillargeon, a line drive gap-to-gap hitter, has a career .280 average for the Crusaders. In 2024, he hit .264 with six home runs and 32 RBI to go with a .448 on-base percentage. He set the program record for walks in a single season (49) and is tied for 10th all-time in career fielding percentage (.990).

King returns to the fold and brings his good barrel skills, solid glove at shortstop and plus speed as evidenced by his 21 stolen bases in 2024 which led the team, ranked second in the Patriot League and also ranks second on the program’s single-season list.

Brown returns his strong chemistry with the pitching staff, plate discipline and contact skills. Last season, he hit .279 with a team-leading 11 doubles and 16 walks, striking out just 22 times. He reached base at a .418 clip.

Also returning to the squad following an injury-marred 2024 is speedy junior outfielder CJ Egrie who hit .348 and stole two bases across eight games for the Crusaders. Senior right-handed pitcher Luke LeMond will pitch high-leverage innings in the back end of games for Holy Cross. LeMond had a 3.52 ERA and 25 strikeouts across 30.2 innings with a team-high four saves which ranked fourth in the conference.

NEW 'SADERS

Holy Cross added 13 new players to the roster for 2025. Look for freshmen Derek Volz, Pedro Leon and Devin Hunt to make an immediate impact on the mound.

Volz, a 6-0 southpaw, has a three-pitch mix from the left side. He sits between 86-90 MPH, pounds the zone with strikes and has a plus slider.

Leon, a 6-2 right-hander, throws three pitches including a plus curveball. He throws 90-92 MPH, and is tough to hit when he throws strikes.

Hunt, a 6-3 righty, is a groundball specialist with a 3/4 arm slot. Mainly a fastball and slider pitcher, he has a turbo sinker that keeps the ball on the ground. He has been sitting at 89-93 MPH in preseason.

NEW ASSISTANT COACHES

The baseball program made a promotion and welcomed a pair of assistant coaches before the start of the season.

2024 Patriot League Coach of the Year Ed Kahovec announced the promotion of Sam Tinkham to Associate Head Coach.

“Sam Tinkham has done an outstanding job during his four years as our pitching coach and recruiting coordinator,” Kahovec said. “This promotion recognizes his fantastic work with our student-athletes, along with his diligent efforts behind the scenes that make our program operate at the highest level.

Kyle Dembrowski (catchers) and Shane Bogli (outfielders) join the staff this season for their first season with the program.

“I am also very excited to add Kyle Dembrowski and Shane Bogli to our staff this year. Both are good young coaches that are eager to add value to the development of our players on and off the field.”
