Drillock leading Crusaders to new heights

By Charles Bare

In the 45-year history of the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse program, only 12 players have ever scored 100 career goals. On April 6, senior Lauren Drillock became the newest member of that club, when she netted her 100th goal as a Crusader with 6:18 left in the fourth quarter against Navy. Reaching this milestone is a great testament to everything Drillock has worked for throughout her time on Mount St. James.

“It is an incredible honor to hear my name mentioned along with those other great players,” Drillock said. “It really speaks to the hard work that I have put in, and all that my teammates have helped me through. I couldn’t have scored any of those goals without my teammates.”

Drillock and her teammates have grown tremendously over the past four years. Last season, Holy Cross made it first Patriot League Tournament since 2017. This year, the Crusaders have reached double-figures in victories for the first time since 2012, and have already locked up another trip to the postseason.

“The biggest keys to our improvement have been that the standards and the expectations have grown,” Drillock said. “We expect to compete with everyone in the Patriot League. That really shows in the extra work everyone puts in on their own to improve.”

A second team All-Patriot League selection in 2023, Drillock was named a team captain this season, along with fellow seniors Maria Comerford and Kelsey Minister. As one of the leaders of the squad, she has had the opportunity to guide the Crusaders to one of their best campaigns in recent memory.

“I was honored that not only the coaches, but also the players on the team nominated me for this role,” Drillock said. “I’m also excited to lead the team because I know we have a special group this year. It has been awesome to see players develop and grow, and know that I’ve had the opportunity to lead them through that.”

In addition to her accomplishments on the field, Drillock has been a standout in the classroom. A member of the College Honors Program with a double major in neuroscience and psychology, she has received Academic All-Patriot League and College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors, in addition to being selected to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Academic Honor Roll. the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and the Holy Cross Dean’s List.

In the summer of 2023, Drillock had the opportunity to perform an independent study under Dr. Johanna Daily at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She conducted a proposal for a clinical trial consisting of dimethyl fumarate as a therapy for the neurological complications of Long COVID-19, gaining extensive knowledge in the field of study.

“It was such a great opportunity and it actually changed my career course,” Drillock said. “I realized that I did want to become a doctor, since I was able to see patients and also do research on things that can help them. It was really eye-opening to me, and it made a huge impact on my future.”

Before she starts studying for the MCAT and applying to medical school, Drillock still has some unfinished business on the lacrosse field. Prior to the start of the Patriot League Tournament, she will lead the Crusaders into action for a pair of home games against No. 5 Loyola (April 20, 12 p.m., Fitton Field) and Boston University (April 25, 6 p.m., Kuzniewski Field). Drillock is confident that Holy Cross has what it takes to finish the season strong.

“We have all been really locked in and focused,” Drillock said. “It is really important that we have great games against Loyola and Boston University, so that we can have confidence going into the tournament. A big thing for us this year has been to stay together, play our game and stay level headed. If we can come out strong against all of these teams, I have faith that this team can go far in the Patriot League.”
