Live Like Maddie

Live Like Maddie

During Saturday’s matchup with Loyola (Md.), the Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team will hold an Autism Awareness Day to help spread kindness, create awareness, and celebrate neurodiversity.

The cause hits close to home for sophomore Tyler Marmo. Tyler’s older sister, Maddie, was born with a rare genetic disorder called Dup15Q Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, epilepsy, and medical challenges. Despite everything she faced, Tyler remembers Maddie as a shining light.

“Maddie had a spunky personality and the kindest of hearts,” Tyler said. “She had unmatched bravery and courage, while facing social obstacles and medical challenges. Maddie never complained, and never allowed her disability to get in the way of enjoying life.”

His favorite memories with Maddie included swimming in the pool, taking her to the boardwalk, and giving her piggyback rides around the house when they were kids.

“There was nothing like seeing Maddie smile and laugh,” Tyler reminisced. “My eldest sister, Sam, and I shared many happy memories and a lot of love with Maddie.”

Maddie’s courageous fight came to an end on December 31, 2023 — though her legacy, impact, and memory live on. In the wake of Maddie’s passing, the Marmo's created the Live Like Maddie Foundation, dedicated to Maddie’s memory, with the mission of offering hope and comprehensive support, providing financial assistance, emotional guidance, and family counseling to empower families as they navigate the unique challenges of raising a child with a rare disease.

When asked what the Foundation’s namesake, Live Like Maddie, meant to him, Tyler said that it means to never give up, to persevere through adversity, and to love and support those around you.

“Maddie’s bravery and ability to persevere through challenges inspired me,” he said. “Growing up, doctors told us there were many things that Maddie couldn’t do, but she always proved she could and would try anything fearlessly.”

As a family does, the team rallied around Tyler and his family.

“I feel very lucky and thankful to be surrounded by such supportive teammates,” Tyler said. “The team has been integral in helping to raise money for the Live Like Maddie Foundation. The Foundation raises money to help financially support families taking care of a disabled child or sibling. Often families do not have the proper resources to support their disabled loved one. The Live Like Maddie Foundation donates items like medical equipment, wheelchairs, and home health appliances to those who need it the most.”

At the time of writing, the GoFundMe that Tyler created along with the team has surpassed its goal, raising over $8,000 for the Foundation.

In addition to the work that Live Like Maddie Foundation will do, Tyler hopes that he can change people’s perceptions of those with disabilities.

“My hope is for people to always embrace and champion those with disabilities,” he said. “Instead of thinking of all the things a person with disabilities can’t do, instead think of what they can do and what lessons they can teach you. Maddie was the greatest teacher I could ask for. She taught me to love with no conditions, respect all people, and never give up in the face of adversity.”
