Sayre works her way back

By Charles Bare

Heading into the 2022 season, Mary Pat Sayre was ready to make an impact on the field for the Crusaders. After not playing in any games during a COVID-shortened season as a first year, she was determined to work her way into the Holy Cross lineup.

But after appearing in only one game early in her sophomore year, Sayre suffered a knee injury which would cause her to miss the remainder of the season. Even though she would not step on the field again in 2022, she never stopped working to make sure she was ready to return to action as soon as possible.

“After getting surgery, I started rehabbing right away, which required a lot of time and energy emotionally and physically,” Sayre said. “Then in the summer I worked out and started running, and I was eventually able to resume contact lacrosse in January of 2023. Then I got a bone bruise on the same knee the second week of preseason, so I missed more time at the start of my junior season.”

Sayre was finally able to make her return to action against Army on March 18, 2023. She wound up playing in eight games during her junior season, tallying two goals and one assist while helping the Crusaders to their first Patriot League Tournament appearance since 2018.

“It felt really good to get back out on the field,” Sayre said. “Being able to come back, contribute and play was really exciting, especially since we had a great season. I was also able to get a different perspective on the game and the team in general from the time I spent on the sideline.”

In addition to the hard work she put in rehabbing her injury and working her way back into the lineup, Sayre has also been a standout in the classroom. A two-time selection to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, she is majoring in Economics and looks to start a career in finance following her graduation. Along those lines, Sayre did a treasury internship with Columbia Bank in Fair Lawn, N.J., in the summer of 2023.

“During my internship, I enjoyed being able to put what I’ve learned in the classroom into action in real life,” Sayre said. “I learned a lot about applying academic concepts to the real world while working as part of a team on different projects.”

Back on the field, Sayre and the Crusaders (1-1 overall) have a big home game coming up with Stanford on Monday (Feb. 19), followed by a pair of road contests at New Hampshire (Feb. 24) and UMass (Feb. 27). Sayre looks forward to the challenges that await in the games ahead, as Holy Cross prepares to open up Patriot League play next month.

“We enjoy playing competitive non-conference games,” Sayre said. “Facing challenging opponents will make us the best version of ourselves, and that is what we need going into Patriot League play. We have a number of great players who play well together, so there is a lot of potential for us to have a successful season. We just need to follow the game plan, execute and stay disciplined.”
