A year after stellar rookie campaign, Toomey is simply enjoying the process

By Sarah Kirkpatrick

In his room, Jack Toomey has two baseballs displayed next to each other: One labeled with the Purdue logo, the other emblazoned with the Southern Conference emblem.

The former represents the right fielder’s collegiate debut in 2023 — a humbling 0-for-10 opening weekend against a Power Five foe. The latter represents the second weekend of his collegiate career — a four-game series against VMI that featured Toomey’s first collegiate hit, a .333 weekend average, two doubles and a home run.

Together, the combination represents a crucial reminder for Toomey: A single weekend doesn’t define you, and even if things don’t go your way right away, success can be just around the corner.

“It's a nice reminder,” he said, “to look at it and know that sometimes, it just takes a little bit of time.”

When all was said and done, Toomey’s 2023 season ended with Patriot League Rookie of the Year, All-Patriot League and Freshman All-America accolades. He was a three-time conference Rookie of the Week and found his way into the program record books just a year into his Crusader career.

Toomey

Toomey doesn’t spend much time focusing on, or caring about, his statistics. But if you’re interested, here they are: during his rookie campaign, he batted a team-best .312 and tied for the team lead with 36 RBI. He recorded a .547 slugging percentage, with 19 doubles and seven home runs. His 19 doubles are the third-most in Holy Cross single-season history and the most by a Crusader since 2010, while his seven home runs rank tied for ninth in single-season program history. He led all Patriot League freshmen in doubles, home runs, RBI and slugging percentage, and also tied for the conference lead in doubles.

All of his accolades were only the “cherry on top” of a productive season for the quietly humble Toomey — as an everyday starter, he gained valuable experience, and simply had fun playing baseball. And his mindset reminds the same as his Crusaders set to open their 2024 season at William & Mary at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16 — just stay loose, stay focused on the process, and have fun.

Growing up around 30 miles down the road in Wellesley, Toomey always gravitated toward baseball — simply because it was the sport where he had the most fun. That’s the word that keeps coming up for Toomey: Fun.

Toomey also dabbled in hockey and golf, but when the rink wasn’t always open, or when he hit the ball a little too aggressively at the links, baseball was always there, and it was reliable. He fondly reminisces about the bonding time he spent with his father growing up, either playing catch in the backyard or going to the local batting cages, and the time he spent with his best friends.

“That’s what I enjoyed about baseball, my closest friends were playing,” he said. “And the chill vibe about it, just hanging out with your friends. Even if you're not having a good day, you can still be on the bench and have a fun day with everyone else.”

His calm approach complements the ebbs and flows of the game of baseball. He embraces the opportunity to always have a goal to work toward — even when you’re hitting above .300, there’s a chance to improve — and if things don’t go your way, he calmly pivots his focus to disciplined preparation for the next game.

“I like to go with the flow — it's supposed to be a fun time,” he said. “If I put too much stress on myself, it kind of takes away from what a good chance I get to be here — to be with good people, have the chance to play with a good program, and to go to a great school.”

With Jack being an only child, the Toomey family — father Dan, mother Jill and Australian Labradoodle Wilson — is extremely close-knit, and being close to home was important for him. (His jersey number, 18, is a number that he chose because it’s one of his mom’s favorites.)

The Crusaders were also the first team to offer Toomey, and for a stellar student — as an economics major, Toomey earned a spot on Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2023 — Holy Cross was the ideal fit.

“They knew my talent before anyone else did,” he said. “And then once I got here, it always was filled with positivity.

“All of those reasons combined — it was the perfect place for me to be here.”

In a Crusader lineup filled with young talent, Toomey — a Preseason All-Patriot League honoree — is poised to be a leader for his team, even as just a sophomore. He’s already given plenty of advice to the incoming freshmen about how to approach the talent Holy Cross will face in coming weeks, with trips to William & Mary, Kansas State, Hawaii and UC Riverside on deck.

Toomey hopes that no matter what, he can always be someone that his teammates can count on.

“I hope they think I’m easy to talk to,” he said. “I like to find out about people and know who I'm talking to. I’m always striving to be a happy person and always trying to give someone a comfortable vibe.”

Back to that first collegiate hit: It was a simple ground ball up the middle, a quiet precursor to what would become his patented doubles and homers later in the season. But it set in motion his consistent mindset that he’s sharing with his teammates now: Stay loose, stay focused on the process, enjoy it — and everything will work out.

And when Toomey steps up to the batter’s box this weekend, he’s ready to embrace the moment.

“I’ll take a deep breath — hold it, then relax, look around, and just take it all in,” he said.
