Jersey Retirement Reflections: Tyler McGregor '06

On Sunday, October 20, 2024, Tyler McGregor will become the third Crusader hockey player to have their jersey retired

Tyler McGregor was a standout member of the Holy Cross men’s ice hockey team from 2002-2006. He led the Crusaders to two Atlantic Hockey Association championships and the first two NCAA Tournament appearances in school history, while scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat Minnesota 4-3 in the 2006 NCAA West Regional. As a team captain during his senior season, McGregor was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year and received third team All-America honors. A two-time first team All-Atlantic Hockey selection, he led the team in goals scored during both his junior (21) and senior (26) years. McGregor totaled 137 points over the course of his collegiate career on 70 goals and 67 assists, and was selected as the 2005-2006 Crusader of the Year. Following his graduation, he played professionally in the American Hockey League and the Central Hockey League. McGregor recently reflected on his time at Holy Cross.

Q: You were the 2006 AHA Player of the Year, a two-time All-AHA First Team pick, a third-team All-American, a two-time AHA Champion and finished your career with 137 points. What were some of your fondest memories of playing hockey at Holy Cross?

They say memories are supposed to fade a little bit, but I still vividly remember so much. Sitting at the lunch table in Kimball, working out with Coach Oliver, road trips, classroom stuff, etc. The one common theme is that my teammates are involved in all of those memories and stories. I remember it all. The accolades are humbling, but such a small part of it all.

Q: Do people still bring up your overtime goal against Minnesota in the 2006 NCAA Tournament? What do you remember from that play and that moment?

It gets brought up at the most random times.  My kids will want to watch the YouTube highlight video from time to time. I work with the Notre Dame athletic department and we are around their rink a lot too, their staff are aware about it and it comes up whenever they play Minnesota during their Big10 schedule.

Again, I remember the entire weekend. But as for the play; I recall being on the bench before that shift at the start of OT, [Matt] Burke’s pass, Blair [Bartlett] going to the net, seeing the open net, except for the ~8 seconds after the goal. I know [Dale] Reinhardt tackled me, and I snapped out of it when Pierre [Nappert-Frenette] was on top of me in the ensuing pile, screaming. The highest high we could ever imagine in sports.

Q: How did Holy Cross hockey prepare you to play in the AHL and CHL?

The transition to my brief pro career was interesting. Nothing could possibly top my time at HC both on and off the ice. We approached the game like pros and respected the process of taking care of body and life away from the rink so you could perform your best. The pro game and lifestyle is very different, but HC instilled the respect for the process of being at your best through a long season.

Q: Did you choose your jersey number? If so, is there any significance to it?

Coach Pearl assigned 20. I wore 15 my entire life but [Brandon] Doria had that. 20 ended up serving me well. My oldest son now wears 15, and my middle son wears 20. Not sure what number my youngest will pick, but he will be the aggressor out there.

Q: Why do you love Holy Cross?

It was exactly what I needed at that stage of my life, in literally every way. The education to continue my schooling. Friends and memories forever. Mentors steering me in the right direction. And I met my wife. Every aspect of my life has been positively affected by HC.

Q: What is one thing you wish you could tell your younger self?

It all works out pretty darn well. Do it all again. Somehow find a way to dive even deeper into everything you choose to do. Learn a language.

Q: Do you have a message to the future generations of Crusaders?

Find your sense of self. Then find your sense of purpose. Embrace your mistakes and learn from them. Enjoy every minute, because even though I risk sounding like an old guy, it goes by so fast.
