Heading into the 2022 campaign, Tristan Stephani was locked in a tight battle with Jimmy Joyce for the Crusaders’ starting goalkeeper position. The two players were neck-and-neck going into the season opener at Manhattan, where Joyce played the first half before Stephani came off the bench to play the second half.

But only 25 minutes into that game, Stephani suffered a knee injury which would cause him to miss the remainder of the season. Even though he would not step on the field again in 2022, he never stopped working to make sure he would be ready to return as soon as possible.

“I spent a lot of time in the training room every single day, in addition to doing extra stuff inside and outside of training,” Stephani said. “I give a lot of credit to Bella Thornton, who spent hours working with me to make sure I was strengthening everything around my knee. I wanted to make sure that when I was able to come back and play, I would be fully healed and strengthened to a point where I wouldn’t need to get an operation done.”

Three-hundred sixty-four days later, Stephani was back on the field in a Holy Cross uniform when the Crusaders kicked off the 2023 season, once again against Manhattan. He has started five of the team’s first six games in goal, while totaling 19 saves during that time.

“There is nothing quite like just getting out there again,” Stephani said. “I’ve been able to secure a spot in the starting 11, and it goes to show how hard I’ve worked to come back. Being back out on the pitch with the boys and helping the team just feels great.”

In addition to the hard work he has put in rehabbing his injury and improving his soccer skills, Stephani has also been a standout in the classroom. A two-time selection to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, he is majoring in economics with an anthropology minor, and looks to one day have a career in the finance and investment banking industry.

Along those lines, Stephani did an internship in the summer of 2023 with NotoVox, health information technology company based out of Boston. He has also joined College Street Capital, a non-profit organization established and operated by Holy Cross students with career aspirations in the financial services industry.

“My experience with NotoVox was super enlightening,” Stephani said. “I did work collecting market data for their health IT application, and the skills I gained will be extremely useful in my future career.

“With College Street Capital, I am on the technology research team, where we investigate stocks to find out whether or not they would be good investments. These opportunities will hopefully put me on a good path.”

Back on the field, Stephani and the Crusaders have two home games coming up in the week ahead. Holy Cross will play its Patriot League opener against American on Saturday (Sept. 16), followed by a non-conference match-up with Massachusetts on Tuesday (Sept. 19). Stephani and his teammates are looking forward to what they can accomplish moving forward.

“Everyone is buzzing for this game on Saturday,” Stephani said. “We’ve put in a lot of hard work from the beginning of August until now. We’ve made some mistakes throughout the first six games, but we’ve learned from them. This is a chance for us to prove how much better we’ve become.”
