Over the last four years, there has been one consistent thing you can always expect to find on the Holy Cross men’s soccer team: Matt McGonigle wearing a captain’s armband.

First selected to be one of the Crusaders’ leaders as a sophomore in the spring of 2021, McGonigle continued to serve as a captain during the 2021 and 2022 fall seasons. Now as a fifth-year senior, he is the first four-time captain in the history of the program.

“It has been a really empowering, very enjoyable experience to serve as a captain of this team,” McGonigle said. “I was thrust into this position when I was really young, when some of the guys on the team were two or three years older me. But everyone has always supported me and allowed me to take on the role full force.”

A third team All-Patriot League selection as a sophomore, McGonigle enters his final year on Mount St. James ranked 11th all-time at Holy Cross with 10 career assists. He enters the 2023 campaign confident that the Crusaders have the ingredients necessary to put together a successful season.

“We have really grown as a roster heading into this season,” McGonigle said. “We have a lot of experienced players returning, and everyone has been willing to take more responsibility and accountability. We also have a lot of freshmen who are going to challenge for minutes, which will be beneficial from day one. I feel like we will have a very compete team from front to back.”

The first opportunities for the Crusaders to show what they are made of will come this week, when they play host to Manhattan (Aug. 24, 6 p.m.) before traveling to Connecticut (Aug. 27, 7 p.m.).

“There is always a lot of energy going into the first game, especially when it is a home game,” McGonigle said. “We’ve played well in our preseason scrimmages, and we are looking forward to putting ourselves to the test in the first game that counts. There are always going to be growing pains and things we have to learn from, but we feel ready and couldn’t be more excited to start the season.”

Heading into his fifth and final season at Holy Cross, McGonigle is looking to cherish every moment he has left with his teammates.

“I’ve really enjoyed every minute I have spent at Holy Cross,” McGonigle said. “Academically, athletically, socially, it has been a real special experience for me. I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to play a fifth season here, and I can’t wait to be back out on the field with these guys.”
