Holy Cross baseball: Five things to watch

Jack DiLauro pitching

VETERAN PITCHING STAFF

Despite its roster featuring 21 freshmen and sophomores, the 2023 Holy Cross baseball team brings significant experience and poise on the mound — and the Crusaders will turn to a veteran pitching corps to guide the way.

Headlining the Crusaders’ rotation is senior righty Jack DiLauro, who threw a team-high 59 innings across 12 starts and tallied 65 strikeouts. He threw six innings of one-hit, one run ball with nine strikeouts in his 2022 Opening Day start at Troy, and he later dazzled with a 13-strikeout appearance against Bucknell. In his career, he’s tallied 120 strikeouts in 110.2 innings of work, starting 21 of his 25 appearances.

Senior right-hander Luke Fox looks to build upon an impressive 2022 campaign in which he earned All-Patriot League honors (he also earned a nod as a Preseason All-Patriot League honoree). He posted a 3-1 record and a pair of saves in 16 appearances out of the bullpen, recording a 2.63 earned-run average over 24 innings. Fox held opponents to a .221 average and struck out 20 batters on the year while conceding just seven walks. He was all the more impressive in Patriot League play, going 3-0 with two saves and recording a 2.25 ERA in 11 appearances and 16 innings pitched. Fox owns a career ERA of 3.09, with just 11 earned runs conceded across 23 career relief appearances.

Righty Nate Chudy bolsters an experienced group of senior pitchers, with 65 career innings of work in 23 appearances. He moved into Holy Cross’ rotation as a junior, and his 2022 outing was his best season yet: Chudy recorded a 5.18 ERA in 41.2 innings, starting all 11 of his appearances. One of his best outings of the year was his season debut on March 9 at VMI — a team that the Crusaders will face four times in 2023 — in which he tossed four no-hit innings with four strikeouts. He later tossed six shutout innings, conceding just two hits, in a five-strikeout showing at Lafayette.

Junior right-handed pitcher Matt Remley also saw an increased workload as a sophomore in 2022 — he started nine of his 13 appearances, ranking second on the team with 46.1 innings of work. His outing against Lehigh in the Crusaders’ regular-season finale helped clinch a berth in the Patriot League postseason — Remley struck out a career-best five batters over seven shutout innings.

Seniors Jake McOsker and Ben Talbot have extensive relief experience (26 career appearances each) in Holy Cross uniforms.

Lefty Tyler Mudd — who patrols center field when he isn’t pitching — may be just a sophomore, but he has already amassed 45.1 innings on the mound, ranking second on the team last season with 45 strikeouts. He also took home Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors on May 3.

Sophomores Trevor Neff (32.1 IP) and Augie Walters (23.2 IP) are a pair of right-handers who impressed in their rookie seasons, and will look to expand upon their success. Neff had a 4.73 ERA on the year, and was a Rookie of the Week selection on April 12; Walters posted a 4.97 ERA in conference action last season.

While the Crusaders boast an experienced pitching staff, Holy Cross also expects its fresh faces to have an instant impact. Right-handers Danny Macchiarola (Garden City, N.Y.) and Jaden Wywoda (Milford, Conn.) are anticipated to help anchor the bullpen and provide starter flexibility; other freshman pitchers who will seek to make a statement right away include right-handers Jake Needham (Winchester, Mass.) and Oliver Brown (Anchorage, Alaska), who also plays in the infield.

POSITION PLAYERS — YOUTH MOVEMENT

The brunt of Holy Cross’ lineup in 2023 will feature a talented group of sophomores and freshmen. Sophomore Sean Scanlon also returns as a 2022 All-Patriot League honoree and a 2023 Preseason All-Patriot League selection; he was the team’s primary designated hitter in 2022, in addition to pitching 26 innings, but will also see time at first base in 2023. He batted a team-best .297 in 48 games, with 10 doubles, two home runs and 19 RBI. He started all 25 Patriot League contests for the Crusaders, with a .310 batting average in that span, hitting eight doubles and two home runs while driving in 10 runs. Scanlon was named the Patriot League Player of the Week on March 29.

Sophomore Brendan Jones started at a number of positions in 2022, but became a mainstay as the team’s starting third baseman late in the season. He is poised to take over as the team’s starting shortstop, and is known by Crusader fans for his defensive prowess, but he also finished the year strong offensively and with great plate discipline — batting .253 and drawing a team-high 31 walks.

Jones, along with now-sophomore infielder Connor Peek, earned Patriot League All-Tournament Team honors in 2022. Peek also had a strong finish to the season, with a .274 average in 39 games played. Peek will likely see significant time at third base this season.

Mudd appeared in a team-high 52 contests in his rookie campaign. Junior Jake McElroy played in 50 games predominantly as an outfielder in 2022. Outfielder Connor Cooney impressed on the basepaths a year ago, with 16 stolen bases — tied for sixth-most in single-season program history.

With the graduation of starting catcher Angelo D’Acunto, Holy Cross will seek a new starting backstop. Rookie Lucas Manning (Winston-Salem, N.C.) will look to make an immediate impact, and junior Patrick Casserly, sophomore Chris Baillargeon and senior Chris Benton will also be in the mix at catcher.

Other Holy Cross newcomers include outfielder Jake Jaszcz (West Chester, Pa.), outfielder Jack Toomey (Wellesley, Mass.), infielder CJ Egrie (Ventnor City, N.J.), infielder Cam Bryant (Miamisburg, Ohio) and outfielder Will Harding (Akron, Ohio).

CAN 2022 LATE-SEASON SURGE CARRY OVER?

After beginning the Patriot League schedule with a 3-8 record, a pair of walkoff wins in a doubleheader against Bucknell on April 16 marked an electrifying turning point, of sorts, for the campaign. That sparked an 8-6 finish over Holy Cross’ final 14 conference games, including a 3-1 final weekend of the regular season, to secure a spot in the playoffs.

The playoff experience was valuable for a young Holy Cross squad as the Crusaders seek to return to the Patriot League Tournament for the 12th time since 2008.

NON-CONFERENCE TESTS

The Crusaders open the season with a four-game series against Purdue from Feb. 17 to 19 in Sugar Land, Texas; the contests will be played at Constellation Field, home of the Houston Astros' Triple-A affiliate, the Sugar Land Space Cowboys. Weekend passes for the series are $28, with daily passes costing $12 for adults.

The following weekend, Holy Cross travels to the Virginia Military Institute for a four-game slate from Feb. 24 to 26. The Crusaders will visit the Carolinas during their spring break trip, beginning with four games at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C. On March 4, Holy Cross will play contests against Dartmouth and Wagner, followed by games against Penn State on March 5 and 6. Holy Cross then heads to Charleston, S.C., for a single game at Charleston Southern on March 7, followed by three games at The Citadel (March 10-12).

New England non-conference contests include Boston College (March 14), UMass (March 21), UMass Lowell (March 22), Harvard (March 28), Brown (April 4 and May 2), Merrimack (April 5), Stonehill (April 11), Rhode Island (April 12) and Dartmouth (April 25).

PATRIOT LEAGUE OUTLOOK

Perennial powerhouse Army enters the 2023 season as the four-time defending Patriot League champions. The Black Knights were selected in a preseason poll to defend their title, earning nine of a possible 12 first-place votes; they will be led for the first time this season by head coach Chris Tracz, who previously worked as the head coach at Marist.

Bucknell, which finished as the Patriot League Tournament runner-up last season, placed second in the preseason poll, earning two first-place votes.

Lehigh earned a first-place vote in the preseason poll, and its roster features both the Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year, outfielder Casey Rother, and the Patriot League Preseason Pitcher of the Year, right-hander Luke Rettig.

Navy and Lafayette will seek to return to the postseason after missing the 2022 playoffs.
