Volleyball set for final two road tilts

The Holy Cross volleyball team hits the road for the final time this season traveling to Patriot League foe American for a conference bout on Friday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. before heading to Loyola (Md.) on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. Both contests will stream live on ESPN+.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (4-18, 1-12 PL):

  • Holy Cross dropped both contests last weekend falling to Colgate and Army West Point by 3-0 scores. Against Colgate, sophomore Gracie Resiman had a game-high 12 kills and hit .429 in the match while classmate Rachel Johnson had six kills and a team-high 14 digs against Army West Point. 
  • Fifth-year setter Halle Carter double-doubled in both matches last weekend. Carter posted 21 assists and 10 digs versus Colgate and had 14 assists and 11 digs against Army. It was the 28 double-double in her collegiate career and 21st as a Crusader.
  • Johnson and junior Abbie Lane are one of the top outside hitter combinations in the Patriot League. Johnson paces the team and ranks fifth in the conference in kills per set (3.22), fifth in points per set (3.73) and sixth in kills (235) while Lane is eighth in kills per set (2.94), eighth in kills (209), ninth in points per set (3.34) and ninth in points (229.5).
  • Holy Cross has bettered their 2022 win total (3) during the 2023 season.

AMERICAN AT A GLANCE (16-9, 9-4 PL):

  • American has won five straight matches including a 3-1 win at Lehigh and a 3-1 decision at Lafayette last weekend. At Lehigh, Zeynep Uzen had a double-double with a contest-best 14 kills and added 10 digs. At Lafayette, Uzen was one of three Eagles in double-digit kills with a contest-high 15 while hitting .308.
  • Junior setter Esma Sipahi was named Patriot League Honorable Mention on Monday. Sipahi averaged 11.50 assists per set in the 2-0 week for the Eagles. Sipahi paces the conference with 10.16 assists per set and ranks sixth in the league with 0.39 service aces per set.
  • Uzen is the conference leader with 4.03 kills per set which comes in at 31st in NCAA Division I. She has totaled 20 or more kills in five matches this season.

SCOUTING NAVY (14-7, 6-6 PL):

  • Navy is 3-2 over their last five games, but 1-2 over their last three splitting two contests last weekend, a 3-1 win at Lafayette and a 3-1 loss at Bucknell. At Lafayette, Jamie Llewellyn double-doubled with 21 kills and 11 digs while Maggie Bodman had 13 kills and hit .417.
  • Llewellyn was named the Patriot League Player of the Week back on Sept. 5. Llewellyn is second in the Patriot League in kills per set (3.48) and fifth in kills (254).
  • As a team, Navy ranks third in the league in service aces (137) and third in hitting percentage (.211)

NAVY VOLLEYBALL FAN INFORMATION:

• Vehicle access to the USNA is limited to those with an approved ID card.  All others must park outside of the USNA.
• Fans can either park downtown and walk through the gate one visitors center (52 King George St., Annapolis, MD, 21402) or park ($10 / vehicle) at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (550 Taylor Ave., Annapolis, MD, 21401) and ride the free shuttle bus. 
• The free shuttle bus will depart from and return to the Navy Health Clinic (695 Kinkaid Rd., Annapolis, MD, 21402) for the Army-Navy match on Nov. 11 due to the Navy football game taking place at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
• The shuttle bus service begins one hour prior to the start of the match and ends four hours after the match begins.
• Regardless of how one accesses the USNA, those ages 18 and over must have a government issued photo identification card, such as a driver’s license, and visitors ages 17 and under who do not have a valid photo ID must be accompanied by an adult.
