'Sader Stories: Gary Acquah '14

Gary Acquah ‘14, a former captain of the Holy Cross football team and All-Patriot League honoree, currently serves as the president of the Holy Cross Varsity Club. With the Varsity Club set to host its Hall of Fame Dinner on Saturday, we caught up with Acquah to discuss his time as a Holy Cross student-athlete, what he's up to now, and the value of the Varsity Club for Crusader alumni.

Tell us more about your role and responsibilities as the President of the Varsity Club — what does the Varsity Club do?

My responsibilities as President of the Holy Cross Varsity Club include leadership, event coordination, and advocacy. I partake in the selection of our Hall of Fame inductees, recognizing exceptional athletes and their lasting impact on our sporting legacy. I am also a part of organizing our Hall of Fame dinner to bring alumni and current athletes together to honor our inductees.

The purpose of the Club is deeply rooted in preserving traditions, fostering ideals, advancing interests, and enhancing the quality and prestige of Holy Cross Athletics within the educational community of the College of the Holy Cross. Members of the Club represent all eras of athletics and all collegiate teams at Holy Cross. As a result, the Varsity Club supports all areas of athletics and does not restrict its assistance to a specific team or sport.

The Club is committed to advocating for athletes' needs within the institution, organizing diverse events like alumni reunions at sporting events, award ceremonies, and managing fundraising initiatives critical for the operation of the club.

Why did you want to give back after graduation and become involved in the Varsity Club?

After graduation, my transition from being an active athlete to an alumnus was a significant shift. I remember the welcome extended to me from the varsity club president as I entered the alumni community. What struck me most was the immediate value placed on my voice as a younger alum. From day one, my input was not only welcomed but genuinely embraced, fostering a sense of inclusion and empowerment. Throughout my time as a player, I always saw the great support offered by the leadership team and directors of the Varsity Club. Their consistent encouragement, guidance, and commitment to the success and well-being of athletes like me left a great impression.

How can Holy Cross student-athlete alumni get involved in the Varsity Club?

As a Holy Cross student-athlete alum eager to get involved with the Varsity Club, there are several great ways to connect with the club. First would be to stay updated and keep an eye on the Varsity Club's communications. You can find newsletters, social media content, and members of the alumni network on our revamped website. Here is where you'll now find updates on events, initiatives, and opportunities to engage. Make it a point to attend the Hall of Fame Dinner, or any other gatherings organized by the Varsity Club that feature both past and present student athletes. These events are perfect for reconnecting with old teammates and coaches while getting a feel for the club's activities. Lastly, contact the Varsity Club's leadership team or directors directly, express your interest in being involved and ask about specific opportunities available. The committee will be sure to align your interests with the initiatives of the club.

Tell us about your career and time at Holy Cross. Do you have any favorite memories from your time playing at Holy Cross?

During my years at Holy Cross, I enjoyed a fulfilling career and cherished every moment spent representing the college on the field. Being chosen as a team captain by my fellow teammates during my senior year was a huge honor and one that meant a lot to me.

Some of my favorite memories were the moments that we spent off the field. Traveling with my teammates and having team dinners during away games were special. It wasn't just about getting ready for the game; it was about bonding and enjoying each other's company. These experiences formed friendships that have lasted long after leaving the playing field.

Two standout memories I have were playing in my hometown of the Bronx, N.Y. — not just once, but twice, and having my friends and family cheering me on. It was also a great experience to play alongside my younger brother who also attended HC.

Tell us about where you are now — how did Holy Cross prepare you for your career?

After graduating from Holy Cross and completing graduate school, I ventured into entrepreneurship, focusing on real estate development and technology in Boston. Our business has grown significantly, expanding across Massachusetts and now focusing on international opportunities.

Holy Cross laid the groundwork for my career. It taught me to think creatively and outside the box, which is crucial in navigating the complexities of real estate and tech. The college's emphasis on problem-solving has been invaluable, enabling me to confront challenges proactively.

Most importantly, Holy Cross taught me the power of networking. Building relationships with diverse individuals has been key to our business's growth which has opened many doors in academics and business.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Don’t be afraid to combine patience with persistence. You can create a powerful mindset if you can balance the two in what you are looking to achieve. Patience will keep you grounded and calm during delays or unforeseen challenges, especially today, but persistence will ensure that you stay ahead of the pack and continue taking steps, making progress, and pushing forward, even when faced with adversity. Embrace the grind and journey.

Why do you love Holy Cross?

I love Holy Cross for its transformative impact on my life. The College pushed me beyond my comfort zone, opening my eyes to a diverse world that I wouldn’t have been able to explore. The supportive community, especially the alumni who generously guided and shared their insights made my experience whole. The alumni's mentorship was invaluable, which inspired me to embrace growth and share knowledge.

I'm grateful to Holy Cross for shaping me into a more open-minded and empathetic individual. It's not just an educational institution; it's a place that provided me with a platform to expand my horizons.
