The Holy Cross volleyball team will be back in Coach George Blaney '61 Gymnasium for two matches this weekend taking on Patriot League foe Lehigh on Friday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. before hosting Lafayette on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m.

Friday's match will be the the Crusaders' Deaf* Awareness Game. Last year, the Crusaders held the Deaf* Awareness game and came back from a 1-0 first-set deficit to beat Bucknell 3-1. Outside hitter Abbie Lane led the the rally with a 14 kill and 15 dig double-double effort.

Lane, who minors in deaf studies on The Hill, has spearheaded the Deaf* Awareness Game for the Crusaders the last two years for the program, being involved with planning and other facets, such as creating a sticker that will be handed out to fans who attend.

Organizing this event has consisted mostly of reaching out to the Deaf community to spread awareness and ask for support at the game," Lane said. “I worked with Professor Li and Professor Clark in the Deaf Studies department, and together we hope to see quite the crowd this Friday night. We have put together several aspects of the event that are very significant to the Deaf community and important to raising awareness within the hearing community. I’ve also reached out to several different organizations in the Deaf community in the surrounding areas of Worcester to attend the game and come support.”

Lane also discussed what will happen during the match on Friday.

“There will be a live interpreter at the game ,along with athletes signing the national anthem before the first whistle,” Lane said. “The first eight points of the first set the crowd will be completely silent, with encouragement to participate in signing different ASL signs for typical volleyball terminology, such as ‘volleyball,’ a ‘kill,’ a ‘point,’ and how to cheer using sign language. There will be flyers and stickers handed out at the game as well.”

One of the top players in the Patriot League, Lane is second on the Crusaders in kills (172) and kills per set (2.97), which ranks eighth in the Patriot League. She also ranks seventh in points per set (3.29) and ninth in total points (191) — those totals are second on the squad. She established a new career-high in kills (18) twice, in a win against Stonehill and at home against American, while hitting an impressive .467 during two separate matches during her junior campaign.

Before she arrived at Holy Cross, Lane was looking for a program to fill her foreign language requirement at Weatherford High School. The Texan decided that American Sign Language (ASL) was the path she wanted to take.

Early in high school when it came time to choose a path for my foreign language requirement, I didn’t really have that much interest in anything but ASL," Lane said. "During the very first course that I took, I began to develop a passion not only for the language but also for understanding the needs of the Deaf community and how our society can better meet those needs. I’ve been so fortunate to continue that path in my studies at Holy Cross.

“I think this particular path of study is not one that many people are aware of. If our team can help raise awareness not only for the Holy Cross Deaf Studies Program, but for the Deaf Community as a whole, then it’s such an achievement. I’m very grateful to help play a part in doing so.”

The team and Lane know that this is an important event for the the hearing impaired community.

“I really feel like the Deaf* Awareness Game provides a platform to continue building partnership with the deaf community, to have more productive conversations, and to work more closely together in all aspects,” Lane said. "'Awareness' is exactly the right word: the game allows us to raise awareness of opportunities in collaboration with the Deaf community. My hope is that the Deaf community understands our genuine commitment to partner with them to meet their needs in the best way possible."
