LOWELL, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's soccer team upset the No. 16 UMass-Lowell and are the first team to defeat the Riverhawks at home in the 2018 season. Max Krause tallied both goals for Holy Cross, marking his first and second goal of the season. The Crusaders improve to 2-3-3 and the Riverhawks drop to 6-2-2.
The Crusaders' win over No. 16 Lowell is the program's first win over a ranked opponent since 2002, when Holy Cross defeated N.C. State, 1-0.
The opening 45 minutes were scoreless as Henry Stutz made two saves. The Riverhawks posted seven shots and the Crusaders had three in the opening half.
In the 53rd minute, Lowell's Renato Kaularic scored on a through ball and shot to the bottom left corner of the net.
After a corner kick opportunity, Holy Cross was awarded a penalty kick as there was a handball in the box. Krause's shot rang into the net just inside the left post as it cleanly beat Lowell's keeper Zach Rowell.
In the 86th minute Krause struck again. The sophomore midfielder cashed in on a free kick from 25-yards out that made its way to the back of the net.
Stutz finished the game with three saves.

- Lowell outshot Holy Cross, 13-9.
- Each team had four corner kick opportunities.

“Today was a day where it was a tale of two halves. In the first half we gave too much respect to our opponent. We were believing in the discipline and confidence of the team and played well in the details. It was a great collective effort, but only a stepping stone for what we are looking to achieve as we move forward.”
Holy Cross returns to Patriot League action at Lafayette on Saturday, Sept. 29 for a 1:00 p.m. game.
