WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's soccer team lost a heartbreaking game to Loyola on Oct. 20. The Crusaders took a quick 2-0 lead but a Greyhound penalty kick and second half goal forced the game into overtime. The Greyhounds struck in the 106th minute despite an impressive 10 save effort from Henry Stutz. Holy Cross drops to 2-8-4 and 1-4-1 in conference play as Loyola improves to 9-3-1 and 4-1-1 in the Patriot League.

 

The Crusaders recorded two quick goals in the first half. In the 26th minute Owen Azrak cleared a ball and sent Simon Becher on a breakaway that the freshman forward capitalized on for his team-best fifth of the season. Just over two minutes later Max Krause sent in a corner kick to the back post that Edi Mujan headed in for a 2-0 Crusader lead.

 

In the 39th minute Loyola scored when they were awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the box. In the 80th minute Loyola scored when Barry Sharifi sent a shot from 25 yards out that went just under the crossbar.

 

Henry Stutz made six saves in the second half.

 

In the first overtime period, Holy Cross tallied three shots and Max Krause hit the post in the 97th minute. In the 107th minute Stutz turned aside a Greyhound shot but Loyola's Josh Fawloe

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross was outshot, 24-14.
  • Stutz made 10 saves in the game. Loyola's keeper Chase Vosvick made five saves.

LUKE DUNIVANT AWARD:

R.J. Place was selected as the 2018 recipient of the Luke Dunivant Award.

The Luke Dunivant Award was established in memory of former Holy Cross men's soccer player Luke Dunivant, Class of 1997, who passed away in 2008 after a courageous battle with leukemia. Each year, the award is given to a member of the ream each year who, like Luke, has inspired others by displaying courage, commitment to the team and sportsmanship during his career. Past winners of the award are Peter Wholly (2009), Tom Van Grinsven (2010), Jordan Michael (2011), Pat McCann (2012), Monty Sanders (2013), Michael Thompson (2014), Eddie Gibbons (2015), Ryan Garvey (2016), and most recently Brad Ross (2017).

Holy Cross travels to Colgate on Oct. 24 for a 7:00 p.m. game.
