The Lead: Filippo Ricupati scored two goals for the Red Storm as the Holy Cross men's soccer team fell to St. John's, 2-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the sixth minute, the Red Storm took the first shot on goal of the game when an attempt by Alistair Johnston was saved by sophomore goalie Henry Stutz.
- Ricupati gave St. John's a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute (65:13) when he scored after receiving a pass off a header from Mike Prosuk.
- Then in the 67th minute, junior Yuji Callahan had a shot saved by Andrew Withers.
- Ricupati found the back of the net in the 89th (88:35) for his second goal of the contest. Harry Cooksley sent a through pass to Ricupati who then scored for the 2-0 final.
KOOLMAN'S KORNER:
- “We played a very strong team tonight,” said Holy Cross head coach Marco Koolman. “We played a lot better in the second half overall but they took advantage of their opportunities and were able to earn the victory. We lost to a very good team.”
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Stutz made a career-best nine saves, while Withers recorded one save.
- The Red Storm outshot the Crusaders 25-4. St. John's tallied 11 shots on goal, while the Crusaders posted one.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, when they host Quinnipiac at 7:35 p.m., at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium at the Luth Athletic Complex.
