The Lead: Junior Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) tallied 11 kills but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to San Jose State, 3-1, by scores of 25-20, 25-11, 22-25 and 25-5, on Saturday afternoon at the UMass Lowell Invitational. The Crusaders went 2-1 at the tournament with 3-0 wins versus Quinnipiac and UMass Lowell. Sifferlen and junior Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) were named to the All-Tournament team. Sifferlen posted 34 kills and 19 digs over the three matches, while Welsch tallied 25 kills and 11 blocks at the tournament.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Junior captain Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) posted 19 assists and sophomore M.C. Magner (Northfield, Ill.) tallied 12 digs.
- Sara Hibbs posted 15 kills to lead the Spartans. Allison Meehan tallied 40 assists, Nandyala Gama posted 10 blocks and Luiza Andrade had 18 digs.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Sifferlen has posted double-digit kills this season in eight of the nine matches so far.
- This is the third time in her career that Sifferlen has been named to an All-Tournament team as she also earned the honor at the 2014 Boston College Invitational and the 2015 Hampton Inn-vitational.
- Welsch has also now been named to three All-Tournament teams as she received 2013 Harvard Invitational and Brown Invitational All-Tournament accolades.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With the Spartans leading 21-18 in the first set, San Jose State then won four of the next six points for the 25-20 win.
- The Spartans controlled the second set winning by a 25-11 score.
- With the Crusaders leading the third set, 24-20, the Spartans won the next two points to cut the lead to 24-22. But a kill by Sifferlen clinched the 25-22 victory. Sifferlen totaled five kills for the set.
- San Jose State then won the match with a 25-5 fourth-set victory.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders return to action on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18-19, when they travel to New Britain, Conn., to compete at the Central Connecticut Invitational. On Friday, the Crusaders will play Brown (7:00 p.m.), while on Saturday they will take on Hartford (11:00 a.m.) and Central Connecticut (6:30 p.m.).
