Shaw's Late Goal Leads Women's Soccer To 1-0 Victory Over Maine

  • The Lead: Holy Cross freshman forward Kara Shaw (Exeter, R.I.) scored her first collegiate goal to give the Crusaders the 1-0 victory over Maine in non-conference women's soccer action on Friday night. The win improves the Crusaders to 5-0-0, tying them with the 1986 team for the best start in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Two minutes into the game, Maine had the first opportunity to score when junior Eve L'Abbe broke away and ran the ball inside the box before it was saved by senior goalie Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.).
  • Holy sophomore Christina Napolitano (Concord, Mass.) launched a header in the 15th minute from inside the box, but was saved by Maine goalie Elise Applegate.
  • In the second half, junior Megan Greineder (East Greenwich, R.I.) shot the ball from 25 yards out, but it was finger-tipped over the goal by Applegate.
  • In the 78th minute, Shaw took a feed from senior Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.) through the backline of the Maine defense on a break-away goal to give the Crusaders the 1-0 lead.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • McCabe picked up her fifth win of the season and third shutout of the year with two saves. Applegate made nine saves and allowed one goal.
  • Holy Cross held the advantage in shots (15-6), shots on goal (10-2), and corner kicks (5-2). The Crusaders outshot Maine 9-2 in the second half.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Holy Cross's win improves them to 5-0-0, which ties it with the 1986 squad for the best start in program's history.
  • The goal by Shaw was the first of her career while Righini's assist was her second of the season.
  • McCabe now has 13 career shutouts, moving her into fourth place in program history.

  • The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, Sept. 7, when they host Albany at 2:05 p.m. at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.
