The Lead: Sophomore Joey DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored the lone goal of the game in the 59th minute and junior captain Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) made four saves to earn his second straight shutout as the Holy Cross men's soccer team defeated Northeastern, 1-0, on Wednesday night at Dedham Field. The Crusaders are now 4-0-1 over their last five games.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Northeastern took the first shot on goal when Wright saved an attempt by Lewis Aird in the 18th minute.
- Wright also made saves on shots by Donovan Fayd (31st minute) and Frantzdy Pierrot (36th minute) in the first half.
- DeVivo scored the game-winner in the 59th minute when he sent a side-foot shot to the far side of the net for his second goal of the season after receiving a pass from sophomore Ryan Gavey (Fairfield, Conn.).
- Wright secured the shutout when he posted a save on a shot by Daniel Korman in the 86th minute.
KOOLMAN ON THE GAME: "I give our team a lot of credit as we stuck to the game plan which led to the victory," said Holy Cross head coach Marco Koolman, "The team did not let the rainy conditions bother us and played through it. This was a total team effort. Our players really focused on what we needed to do. As long as we continue to compete as a team we will keep getting positive results."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Wright had four saves for Holy Cross, as Dylan Faber posted one save for the Huskies.
- Northeastern held the advantage in shots (9-7), shots on goal (4-2) and corner kicks (6-2).
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Holy Cross is 4-0-1 over its last four games outscoring its opponents by an 11-4 margin.
- This five-game streak without a loss is the Crusaders' longest since a 4-0-2 stretch in the 2008 season.
- DeVivo now has a team-best two game-winning goals this season. The goal was the eighth of his career and his third career game-winner.
- Wright now has eight career shutouts and two this season.
- Today's shutout was the second straight for the Crusaders.
